If you are not keen on Japanese cars, your choices for budget race cars drops to almost zero. The Mustang is probably your best option, followed by a GM F-Body and then a Neon.
I disagree. A vintage race Spitfire or Midget doesn't have to break the bank. Aeronca65t races a similar aged Midget that he built for cheap IIRC. http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/reader-rides/256/
I vote stick with the Midget.
Just a note:
The Corvette Club of Michigan is holding its final autocross of the year on Oct 14 at GM's Hamtramck plant. I can't be there, but if you want to play, it's a good place to start.

So where does one find specs on the necessary roll cage for vintage racing? All I've ever seen is SCCA approved cages for upward of $600. That's more than I paid for the car!

i didnt say it handled it. they tent to de-manufacture themselves. coming down the front strait, our driver downshifted instead of braked a few times due to the red mist. they were impressive paperweights after that.
the rev limiter was set for 6500, but that only works on the upward side under throttle, not the downward side from spin up from trans and rear wheels. he blew a few that way before he figured it out.
another thing to help with motivation: start a build thread. let us encourage you and motivate you to hear it hit a lick before the snow falls. and celibrate with you when it does.

Sorry if I mislead- I was certain there was no way a Midget engine, regardless of type, would have survived that.
Where exactly do I start a build thread? Is that under my profile?

Unfortunately, your 1500 midget won't be accepted in most vintage race organizations. Check around to where you might race and get familiar with the rules before you commit anything. And a SCCA cage for $600 is not only typical, but a good investment. You MIGHT get away with something less in vintage, but it doesn't mean it is a good idea.
go out to th emain community page, there is a section for build threads. make a new post in there, complete with pictures.
ill even be nice and give you a link.
