You can't rent if you are under 25, fleets tend to get excellent maintenance, and the people who rent cars tend to be businesspeople just shuttling from the airport to meetings and back. 99.5% of rental cars get better and more routine maintenance than normal cars, especially now that most of the large chains have their own used-car dealerships.
Do you know how many rental cars I've autocrossed? Or did extreme off-roading with? E-brake slides, reverse FWD donuts if possible, etc. I might be that outlier though. Over 25 and drive like an 16 year old when I'm in a rental.
I also got a horrible rental car in Buffalo last year. Hyundai POS, seemed like it had never been cleaned, maintained, etc. I honestly thought the guy at the counter just gave me his car and he took the rental for the weekend. Steering wheel rattled to the point I could almost not control the car at any MPH over 45. Thing was a quart and a half low on oil, rear tires were bald. Excellent maintenance my arse. This was an Enterprise at the airport too. I ended up getting it free after complaining but my notion of thinking they get excellent care went out the window after that.
