Me, too.
(Sorry)

I'm never going to build this up because I'm lazy and don't really seem to turn wrenches anymore, but I'm going to riff off this and describe what I've actually thought about on these lines;
1985 or 1986 Mustang sedan. 3.2 SHO V-6 and a T-5. Cobra IRS. Cobra brakes. Capri dash panel for the six-hole cluster with whatever gauges you like. White with a black hood like the GT's had. Basically the sedan version of this;
That, I think, would be hot.
Does swapping a Disco to a Chevy V8 do anything to help reliability or is it some sort of innate feature of the chassis?

Are these actually good? Stay away from 4.6 and 4.8? If i buy one with 150k miles can i expect it to eat me out of house and home?

I think the other two are a bit more rare, which might mean more dollars, but not sure. I honestly know nothing about their reliability, but love how BMW v8 cars run. If you DIY it's probably not a big deal to upkeep. I got eaten up by a 540 when I didn't DIY, but it was all minor crap with a lot of labor involved. The driving experience is always first rate.
It's probably a horrible idea, get a Toyota.

I seem to remember someone doing these as professional conversions, but there are also a ton of amateur ones.
I am about to get rid of my montero if you are looking for something nice and 4x4 again. 109k miles 20th anniversary, nice factory stereo, leather, power everything, 7 passenger seating if you need it, OME 2" lift, 31" duratracs. The 3rd Gen Pajero/Montero won Dakar 7 times in a row from 2001 to 2007 and 12 times total making it one of the winningest marques in the sport
However I fully support V8olvo wagon because awesome.

This makes me sad, since I drive a leased Cherokee Trailhawk as my daily driver and have been quite impressed with it.
I shall still participate, since I'm a sport. Third gen 4Runner gets my vote.
JK, I meant Cayman GT4. Yeah...Cayman GT4.
EFI Samurais aren't so bad at 70MPH if kept in good tune. I think EFI and tin top are mutually exclusive due to year by year changes.
How about other Suzuki trucks? They're all true body on frame, unlike the XJ. An X-90 perhaps?

finally you're getting sensible.
The 85 is the one to get. 1st year for EFI and last year for solid front axle. Buy it now.
I had an IFS toyota and it also was great. You can't go wrong. Except with rust.. but hey..

What is the point if we don't throw at least one requirement out the window on a "what car?"
I really like my X5 with a manual trans. I bought mine 5 years ago for a little over your budget. they should be well in now.

I owned a stock 87 4x4 Toyota pickup with the 22re and had my 99 XJ at the same time. I much preferred the XJ and sold the Toyota after fixing a blown headgasket (it's 2nd in 150k). IMO the 1st gen 4runner would be a big step down for a DD.
