Does anyone know the most miles someone has put on the engine in a car without rebuilding (other than semi truck engines). I have heard of a mercedes OM617 with 800k before it was retired, and a couple of TDI jettas with over 750k used for wide load escort vehicles, but thats the most i know of.
Hmm, this guy is not too far from my parents. Maybe I should swing by and check out his ride. Quite the accomplishment.
Wow that's amazing.
so GRM forums, I ask you, what's your highest mileage?
My '91 tercel is nearing on 617,000 km right now.
I have heard of this volvo before. Pretty sure he gets paid to rack up miles at this point. His engine has been rebuilt a few times, but it's still an original block.
Saw that car in person at Swedish Car Day last year. You'd never know.
Currently approaching 249k in my 9000 Aero.
I think that engine's only been rebuilt once, at around 600k miles. Otherwise, it's just regular oil changes.
He was at Carlisle a few years ago with it, and had a chart showing what he's done. Remarkable what little he's had to actually do.
Basically, it was just regular fluid changes, and the car keeps on going and going and going.
Something tells me most visitors to this BB would be "tired/bored" by nearly any car they have driven before they managed to put even 1 Million miles on it.
I wonder if the owner has had to replace the driver's seat? Most cars I've owned for long periods get just a little too "broken in" in the driver's seat....like a well worn bed.
I also wonder if this guy ever gets paranoid that something really bad will happen to his car before he's able to verify one of the important milestones. I mean, imagine totalling your car 5 or 10 miles short of 1 Million miles.
I had a 1981 Plymouth Voyager with 488K on it. I actually scrapped it because I didn't want to work on it anymore. Had a 318 and we did timing chains every 110 whether it needed it or not. I put 80k on it hauling Amish and bought it from someone who had used it the same way.

I thought someone on this forum knew the mechanic that claimed "he put two kids through college with this car" ?
A friend of mine parked next to him at a Volvo show and told me that he had to keep asking him to turn off the engine, as he was choking on the exhaust.

The most I've personally seen was an '86 VW Golf Diesel with 690k miles with the original engine and trans. It was used to run medical samples for testing (tissue, blood, etc.) to Louisville from Evansville at least twice a day. I actually had a chance to buy it for $100 when the guy replaced it. It still ran great, but had a squishy master cylinder.
The article states that his mileage averages to over 64,000 miles per year, which equates to 176 miles per day. How long does it take this guy to get to work?
Oh, and I almost forgot about the 1992 Cummins Diesel Dodge 250 we had at work with 1,165,000 miles. Original engine and 5 speed trans, although the trans had had bearings put in it a few times. The guy we got it from bought it new and delivered trailers with it. When we got it it still ran great, but the front suspension needed to be completely rebuilt. We sold it as it sat to some farmers to use it out on the farm.

I drive 140 round trip every day to work and have driven longer for other jobs so I can see it. I have 100,000 on my car in 3 years (I dont drive to the office every day)

I've been reading about that car since before the Internet was invented. There must have been a recent news item about it, I just noticed a mention on another car board this morning.
To me, Irv is sort of an equivalent to the guy who has eaten a Big Mac for every meal for the last 20 years.
I've had a few Volvo 1800s and they are VERY soild cars as long as the rust is kept @ bay. The engines are simple and VERY stout. If I'm not mistaken the B18B(what should be in that car) makes 108hp from its 108 cid. As far as maintanence goes... a big issue I remember was tuning the SU carbs. The thing I hated the most about that car was the generator charging system.
As far as living with one car for nearly 50 years.... the 1800 would be one that might make it possible... it can accommodate a person well over 6" tall, and it is comfy as long as the seats were kept up to provide good support. .
253k miles on the original Celica motor. (With many miles of boost and nitrous) Just under 300k miles on the original Escort motor.
Unfortunately, i will not be exploring how much farther either motor will go.
I've met Irv, real nice guy and down to earth. That car has been rebuilt a time or two. Body has had accident damage repaired and the engine has been rebuilt at least once. He replaces whatever goes bad. Has a lot of factory backing now, advertisement for Volvo. He criss-crosses the country doing car shows and events with it nowadays.
