Basically it comes down to: Buying a running vehicle for under $2k is almost a zero risk proposition in any circumstance.Swank Force One wrote: I still have a hard-on for the Classic Range Rover, but i always thought the P38 was a much worse idea, so figured it was more worthy of a mention in this thread.I'm tempted every time a $1500 Discovery pops up on C-List. The worst part is they pop up all the time. A $1000 will get you this one. Needs frame work.
You are absolutely correct, unfortunately, I have a habit of buying, driving until something explodes or I get bored, letting it sit for years and then hauling off for scrap.
I'm trying to nip that habit in the bud.
Need a FB?
How about a E24? It's not even broken yet.
The VW R32 has been calling me from dark corners of my mind since I drove a friends with a suspension upgrade around Jefferson years ago in the pouring rain.
I also have a love for the look of the Fiat 124, the Triumph TR/GT-6, TR-4 and many other examples of things that look way better than they really are.
Any of the small british car projects that pop up...i already have 2 money pits dont need another but the want is strong.
i havnt really contemplated this since im drawn to fairly simple vehicles. Closest i can get to anything with a bad reputation is a factory turbo pinto
Iv'e had the Range Rover Classic LWB. Great truck, but was well maintained by it's mall crawling owner (and had the air ride replaced by coil springs). Sold it at 125k miles in perfect shape. Replaced it with an '01 P38 that was also an excellent daily driver.
Had an E38 and the P38 at the same time:
Both were excellent cars that took basic hand tools to maintain and repair, though neither needed much repairs.
As for my choice in this thread, I WILL have one of these:
I have no problem with the common problem areas of the timing chain and the high pressure hydraulic top hoses...
Do rentals count?
I just finished renting a Hertz / Penske Mustang GT. The "1 of 150 built" variety. It beat the crap out of me on a 5 hour road trip.

PLEASE do both of these. I'll travel to help wrench on the viper.
For my part, I've always been intrigued by g60 corrados. crazy little german supercharger in a sweet 2door hatch..
In reply to poopshovel: Sadly, you aren't the only one. Even more sadly, I have a baaad feeling that this problem is going to end with a clk55 in my driveway. Like a skydiver who's pulled the main and the reserve and.....
Porsche 931 aka 924 Turbo. I have a strange desire to own one, preferably in white. Strange as in, I'm not really attracted to 944s but these get me excited.
Also strange because my taste in cars usually runs toward the simple and domestic.
What could go wrong with an 80s turbo-mobile.
You know the joke about the pickle slicer, right? Well I call cars like this "pickle slicers" because you know you shouldn't but you still want to.
Right now on my list are sub-$2k W126 Mercedes (especially 560SEC's); manual trans Audi Avant's; any Jaguar made since the 70's; and BMW E24's (633/635csi's).
Actually the BMW's aren't that bad, they just aren't particularly meant to be used as a daily driver, which is exactly what I would do.
Had the modded allroad. Had the uber Phaeton. Have the VR6 Passat. (currently getting a new motor in Florida, sigh)
And yet I still lust for another allroad or a S8. Slow learner.
