Ok, so I was at the shops today and saw it... It reminded me just how bad I want one, but know it'll probably provide me with enough misery for a lifetime..... An old vw kombi pickup.

It was riddled with metal cancer, had more paint touch ups than real paint, but still I stood and drooled like an idiot.

photo G60-1.jpg Here is my vote.... I swapped a Miata for this sight unseen from a guy in SC. We met in Charlotte gave each a quick drive swapped titles and tags and headed home(water pump adj. Bolt). Corrado seemed miserably underpowered (especially considering the car was a Stage 2 Neuspeed equipped car). The transmission never shifted right (did me in for owning an automatic). Transmission was overfilled, bottom 2 bolts of supercharger silencer were missing, wrong serpentine belt for a 68mm pulley, wrong alternator pulley, and finally an injector plug not plugged in fully. I'd probably swap my Probe GT Turbo for a G60 with a 5 speed. Loved the car, the previous owners horrid mechanical aptitude, not so much....

I think they are only fragile because people put them well above their limits in mods. I never knew someone with a stock DSM other than my parents.

What could go wrong with an 80s turbo-mobile.

I would like one of these a lot. However, yes, it would be a terrible choice.

Pulsar GTIR? Going to be in my garage soon. Pursuing buying one now. Next up: Stagea. Then my Nissan garage sill be complete.

edit: Just remembered I want a S14a Autech Version as well.... damnit. I need a 4 car garage.

Want a white one like this.

From what i've been reading they are not unreliable unless you turbo swap and put like >300whp on them then the trans gets iffy.

Mr_Clutch42 wrote: Another one would be a Delta Integrale because I would need in import parts from Canada or Britain.

Or Japan where they are like $5000 cheaper. I saw two, an 8v and a 16v (86 and 88 iirc) for $4000 and $5000 respectively. Both with low KM and no rust. Only reason I did not pursue them is I know nobody who knows anything about Fiats/Lancias.

I import parts for my Skyline and importing the parts isn't very expensive. Not as much as you would think.

I would go for it to be honest. http://pacificcoastjdm.com/auctionsearch search for the auction history on them and see for yourself.

In that blue

I had the E39 540i and I loved driving it. Repairing it was a huge PITA as all sorts of E36 M3 would break that was really expensive like the exhaust catalysts had a habit of conking out before you got to 100k.

Despite all those problems with the 540 I've considered the E39 M5. It also has issues, but different ones. Like after a while it develops excessive carbon build up in the cylinder heads.

Somehow the realization that something like a cheap rusty Alfa GTV6 or a cheap rusty Scorpion is a pile of crap doesn't seem as bad as coming to terms with the reality that the 308 I could afford would cost me thousands to get/keep running, and would still be rusty pile of crap is sad...and yet I still want one.

Some of the vehicles mentioned so far fall into this category (if you buy the best/newest/most cared for example they aren't bad) but I think the point of the thread is that sometimes the desire outstrips the means and we fall for the idea, but buying the cheap one would be a mistake!

I hear you loud and clear. And with the ability to actually buy one should I chose, I just can't do so when I compare it to the value of the American Tuperware equivalent. And as much as I don't really want a Vette, (well part of me does) the Ferrari has nothing more to offer than misery and financial ruin.

I still am going to own one if those some day. I always thought those were one of the best looking cars ever made. Kinda golf meets GTV6

The air injection port carbon clog problem is all BMW V8s. Seems to coincide with failed diverter valves that get ignored because it seems that most people who buy BMWs treat them like they were status-symbol Camries.

Guess I didn't get to that on the 540. Only had all the cats go out and the clutch and the valve cover gaskets multiple times and every cooling system component all before 100k miles.

Wow, I have had or have a number of cars on this list and want more!!

Bad idea cars I've had:
Land Rover Discovery II

Rolls Royce Silver Shadow (Lemons racer)

Z4M, which is an E46M3 in a smaller body

I currently have this, which can only go well, 1973 Citroen SM, also to be a Lemons car

Almost of the cars on my mental short list to replace the MGA and Miata are bad ideas, either a big luxury car or an older european sports car
Jag XJR
BMW 740i Sport
M-B S500

Boxster S
911 Targa
Ferrari Mondial

Not at all. It's actually been great. 4 years, 30k miles, no repairs. I've only ever had the wheels off to change tires. I've done 3 oil changes, driveline fluid changes once, and one inspection2 service (valve adjustment, plugs, filters, etc). Had an intermittent check engine light that was cleared by cleaning out a crankcase vent tube. So, basically perfect, which is amazing for a car like that. Still drives like new.
