Took a trip to Orlando to look for e36 parts on Friday. Struck out on that but both yards I went to had tons of C4C cars. Apparently they are running the engines with sodium silicate to destroy them and putting them out there like a normal car. So if you are looking for non moving engine parts or any other late model parts now might be a good time to hit up your local yard. It was very odd seeing so many late model vehicles at a u-pull.

So I guess its a good time to stock up on fuel injectors, sensors, fuel pumps and everything else to do a dozen megasquirt projects.

I thought C4C cars were not to be touched by junkyarders for parts. Can you take parts off the C4C cars in your yard or are they off-limits?

The Pull-A-Part here has a section dedicated to C4C stuff. There is a list on each car of what is and isn't for sale. Pretty much the entire drivetrain is off limits.

Gah! Good idea. Time to hit the yards, because we need a Mustang T5 on the cheap.

Been finding them at Parts Galore here in Detroit as well. Most of them are tagged with orange/pink paint underhood, so keep eyes open for that.

Our local pick n pull type places in socal have a lot of nice vehicles from the program. Quite a few E30s and the usual SUVs. I pulled some wiring out of two E30s and the accessories were available. All of the engines were tagged.

Our local place is like a blazer/s10 grave yard its pretty neat considering I could use a new zr2 rear and a 2wd LSD rear

All of the engine bays in the CFC ones (literally dozens) in the yard here are painted with pink paint. If there's a speck paint on it, it cannot be sold. No exceptions. They went to town with the paint too so you're pretty much out of luck if you need something off the firewall like a wiper motor or master cylinder. It's a shame really.

So what I've learned from Carson is that before my next trip to the U-Pull yard I should add a small jug of paint stripper, more blue towels, and a can of carb clean to my toolbag. Even with the retarded CFC destruction method, there are still lots of good parts on the engine (ignoring the surrounding stuff) to be had like injection, ignition, manifolds, sensors, oil pans, valve covers, etc. just like most wrecked heaps would have. Waste not, want not!

No, they can be salvaged just like any other car - it's just the engine that had to be destroyed. They do have a time limit for scrapping the cars out before the remains have to be crushed; I don't recall the exact amount of time but it's all spelled out on the car.gov website.

Wow, those yards really need to read the rules, as they are losing out on a lot of revenue for no reason.

180 days. You are even allowed to process the cars in a normal fashion, so if you strip it you can still shelf the parts like the alternator, starter, fuel pump, computer, or what ever you would normally shelf, but the hulk must be crushed within 180 days. The parts can stay on the shelf indefinitely.

Cash for Clunkers trade-ins piling up
By KEN THOMAS Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Trade-ins from the Cash for Clunkers program are piling up and auto recyclers are seeking more time to meet the deadline for disposing of all those vehicles.

At some places, Ford Explorers, Chevy Blazers, Chrysler Town & Country minivans and other popular clunkers are parked bumper to bumper on several acres, many marked "C4C" on their windows, waiting to be drained of fluids, stripped of valuable parts and eventually flattened for scrap.

"I've got a parking lot of almost 4,000 vehicles right now," said Harry Haluptzok, chief executive of John's Auto Parts in Blaine, Minn., near Minneapolis. His business typically dismantles 100 vehicles per week, but the workload has now more than doubled, and Haluptzok hired 10 more workers to keep up with all the extra vehicles.

Under the program, the cars are required to be crushed or shredded within six months of the date the vehicle is transferred from the dealership. Recyclers say the deadline, even a few months away, will be hard as they try to remove spare parts such as transmissions, front and rear axles, starters and alternators.

"True recycling is using something to its fullest potential and then recycling it over again by making it into steel and sending it out to become another engine or transmission or car," said Jeff Cantor, an auto recycler in Candia, N.H. "We're breaking that circle here by crushing good quality parts. We can't process them quick enough in six months."

Consumers bought nearly 700,000 new vehicles in late July and August through the program, taking advantage of rebates of up to $4,500 on new cars in return for trading in their older vehicles. Congress tripled the size of its original $1 billion price tag because of the program's popularity.

Used engines from the vehicles were required to be destroyed to promote improved fuel efficiency.

The American Recyclers Association, a trade group representing auto recyclers, said the six-month deadline to crush the vehicles was developed in line with the initial $1 billion program, but never took into account the additional vehicles sold when the program was expanded. The association met with the Transportation Department in late September seeking an additional six months to recycle the cars.

"We do have a lot of facilities that have two or three times the number of vehicles they could ever have imagined getting. They're trying to process these in addition to their regular business," said Michael Wilson, the trade group's executive director.

Transportation Department spokeswoman Sasha Johnson said the department was aware of the request and noted that under the regulations, "most trade-ins through the CARS program do not need to be crushed until at least early next year."

In metropolitan Los Angeles, Aadlen Bros. Auto Wrecking in Sun Valley brought in about 6,000 vehicles through the Clunkers program since early September. "At times, we were having to stack cars on top of cars — it got unruly there for a little bit," auto recycle Nathan Adlen said.

Most of the vehicles on their 26-acre lot go into a self-service yard, letting customers find the used parts they need for their vehicles. A car typically stays there for a month, but many vehicles have gone to the crusher earlier than normal because of the influx.

In Minnesota, Haluptzok expected to receive more than 1,000 cars through the program but saw his load grow to nearly 5,000. Each vehicle needs to be drained of oil, antifreeze and other fluids and then properly recycled.

"If it's about recycling, the thing to do is to give us another six months and let us do them the correct way each time," he said.

Today I got several parts from clunkerized engines in the U-Pull yard. I'd say less than a quarter of the CFC engines had paint on them, and those that did only had a little bit of paint on them. It wasn't as big of an issue as I'd expected after reading this thread.

The only parts the yards here wont sell are the block, heads, crank, rods and pistons. Anything else is fair game. I saw a lt1 camaro that someone had pulled the heads (and presumably bought them becasue they were no where to be seen), so obviously there was ways around it.
