I saw this on the Memphis CL this morning.

http://memphis.craigslist.org/cto/1705898110.html

and aside from the "hinkey" ad, the pix don't look like any VW currently sold in the U.S. as it looks too small.

The aren't sold in the US. I have seen a few advertised. There is a 2008 Golf City (MKI) in southern Michigan and a Gol (like the car above) in Jackson.

I tried "blowing up" the picture but all I could see was a nameplate with 5 or 6 letters on the left side of the hatch, and 2 or 3 on the right side. I've seen cars in this area that look similar to this, but are badged as Chevy's. I'm ALMOST curious enough to go see this in person as it's about 10 minutes from me.

I'm guessing this is a stolen car, so the key is probably not the only thing missing.

It's a Polo:

How it got into America is a mystery; they were never imported here. Maybe from Canada or Mexico?

I don't believe they were ever sold in Canada, but I do know that Monterey and Saltillo, Mexico are crawling with these things. They also sell a little pickup version of a smaller VW, kinda like a Rabbit Caddy. I'd like one of those.

Me too. Roughly $12,000 US at current exchange rates.

It's actually a VW Pointer. It's a Brazillian built model (called the Gol in Brazil). I'm pretty sure they were only called the Pointer in Mexico. The old Gol is what the Fox was based on, so it's pretty much a newer gen Fox, kinda. The Pointer on the other hand, has always been a Mexican VW model, but previous versions were actually rebadged euro Escorts.

so... no way of getting a title?

For that car, probably not. For another random VW someone could easily mistake that for...

Not much of a way to get a title, if there were we VW guys would have already found it. A lot of us have been driving around in our Mk2 & 3 Golfs for 15-20 years, waiting for smaller cars like the Polo or Gol to hit the dealerships before we buy new again (the current lineup is too fat/expensive). As much as we love our cars, the kindest word for our relationship with VWoA would be "adversarial".

I also know a few VeeDub guys who just gave up hope and bought a Honda Fit when it came out..

There are a few 1985 GTis in the states that look like these: http://www.vw.co.za/models/citi/

A new Mk.1. Oh, man...I gotta find me a dashboard and an SA smuggler..

Waidaminnit, isn't South Africa a right-hand-drive country?

You can buy a new Mk2 Jetta in China, but it's got a freaky nose treatment.

China is too.

I never thought the Jetta was a particularly striking/attractive car, the above pix make the case that it still isn't.

Oh, wait, I take that statement back, for some reason I like Jetta wagons...the current gen. REALLY looks great.

Weird thing is...although much of Asia drives on the left, China actually drives on the right. Notice the wheel on the LHD side in that pic of the Chinese Mk.2 I posted. I also found a "Wikitravel" article, but take it with as many grains of salt that you'd do with any wiki-style thingie..

Ah, VW's more like Toyota with this kind of thing than they are like Porsche. The "911" still kinda looks the same, regardless of what chassis is called a 911. The Jetta's more like the Corrolla...the name keeps going, even though the cars have really been changed up over the years. Here's a Mk.2 with the original Euro/US bodywork:
