I've purchased two fiat x1/9s. One I picked up myself, so has "no" shipping costs, like if I pickup a part in person. The other, I had shipped to my house. Obviously, I would prefer to not have to include the shipping of the car to myself in the budget.

Rules state that costs to pickup your hooptie from the seller are exempt, but that shipping must be included on parts.

Is it ok to just claim the "free shipping" exemption on one car per build, and not have to make a distinction between which car ends up the "challenge car" and which ends up the "parts car"? kinda like you claim one set of "free" tires, but don't have to distinguish the "first" 4 tires? I can see how it would be unfair to have someone ship themselves 4 different parts cars and not count any of the shipping.

Please rest assured that of the 2 cars I bought, there is barely enough to make one full car. Haha.

I would think the one you bring to the Challenge is exempt. Now that begs the question of which one are you bringing. Do you go off of the VIN? The one putting more parts into the build? The one that is the easy button? Personally I think I'd weigh the Challenge cost vs the work needed. From what you've posted before I think the new one might be just as good if not better than the "build" car. If so then make that your Challenge car and claim your exemption. In the end you know the answer but you're the one that has to be comfortable with the answer you give.

Yeah. The biggest known downside to the new acquisition is the lack of windshield.

I don't know how that plays with nhra safety, but I think it's a no no. I need to slog through the nhra rules (link in the challenge rules page is currently broken). The yellow one has a perfect windshield. Of course, at the end of the day everything is swappable with a welder a beer and a good attitude, right?

Speaking of nhra rules, what is the best way to get an idea of what is needed?

The general regs I understand are the gospel, but they are organized in a way that means I have to read about all types of cars at once. I don't care about the supercharger retention devices necessary on nitromethane cars...

Then there is like a two page cheat sheet, but it is cryptic and in order to get much from it you need to flip back and forth all over the place in the gen regs.

Finally, there is a third document that seems to lay out the rules by e.t. level. This makes sense to me, but does that cut it if I only go by that one (ie is it a real rulebook, or just another 'helpful' cheat sheet that could be wrong?)

I kind of assumed any "complete" car I dragged home was no cost?

I read the rule to state that the Challenge car is shipping exempt but a parts car is not.

Good thing I bought the S10 in Florida, and the Fireturd locally, then.

You know the exchange rate to Britain is pretty good right now. Wonder what $2017 will buy over there. Maybe one that doesn't pass their inspections?

Found my answer Saab 9-3 Aero and $500 left in the budget for mods.

Hehehe.

Just imagine how different our world would be if Saab made these rwd like the BMWs and mercs they were competing with.

From my worldwide searches I can never seem to find anything that hits all my qualifiers for power, age(for import reasons) or strange enough.

The answer to the first question is shipping doesn't count for the car that arrives at the challenge as your entry.

Is the age thing ok if it's not for road use?

It is possible but the paperwork is much harder. Quick research says it needs a letter from the manufacturer stating it was built as a racecar and it needs to be used in competitive racing not just your average track day.

The rules make a distinction between the Challenge car, and parts or parts deals.

The Challenge car is exempt from shipping costs. A parts car is not.

I think ultimately which hooptie is the Challenge car comes down to the VIN number, and perhaps the tub.

I have a similar problem. 2 identical cars. 1 was free, 1 was not. They are in similar condition. My personal preference is to use the car that I paid for, but I can't unless I want to take the budget hit.

If shipping for the challenge car is free, does that mean I could have my challenge car shipped to Gainesville at no hit to the budget?

I'm at a crossroads right now as far as the challenge goes, and the answer to that question could determine which car I bring and which class I compete in.

What that means is there is something that I want to do, I do not have the ability to tow on my own, and won't have a street legal car by the time I'm done, if I do what I want to.
