I'm usually just a lurker here, but I thought this might be the right (read: ONLY) place to show this. Some of the other forums I read would surely tar and feather me for this
I bought a cone filter from Summit for my project car (turbo diesel 356) and I wanted to put it in a box so I could get cold air to it from a scoop. As you can imagine, there's not a lot of space available in the engine room, so I needed something just the right size.
Touring around my cluttered sh**hole shop, I espied one of those cute little Heinecken mini kegs (sadly - empty). A quick pass of a large outside caliper showed it to be EXACTLY the right size for the filter to fit with the top end cap cut out. The end was then cut out and cleaned up with a small stone in an air grinder. Sure enough, the cone filter was a tight press fit inside the formed seam in the can top.
Better yet, the plastic handle top of the "kegglet" could be trimmed to act as a retainer to hold the filter in with a long hose clamp around it. The only thing needed to be fabbed was a side air inlet from the scoop with a barb for the crankcase vent. That was made up from some thin-wall tubing with a flange so it could be pop riveted to the can.
There you go, high-zoot euro airbox with a refund value of only 5 cents!(NY,MA,VT,ect.)
Bare in mind, for racing purposes, be sure to use the ones that say "LIGHT".

That's pretty sweet. And grassroots too. Do people from Michigan have to value it at 10 cents?
What size and brand of air filter is that?
Yes, I'm sorry, .10 in Mich --
The filter is Summit's own brand, 2.5", currently on sale for about 20 bucks.
You had me at "turbo diesel 356". I want to know more! BTW, Nice work!
yes please...more car info...start, and don't stop until I am asleep.
I should buy you a Guinnes because that counts as "Genius". Very nice
I can see it now.
"Hay lets make a couple of air box's"
Time goes by
"I am not as think as you drunk I am... .. . What were we making again?"

Detail, detail, detail!! Maybe you have a website of the build we can all drool over? You're my personal hero right now.

We need more details on your car! NOW!
No more lurkey... posts required damnit!
Now THAT is cool. Many more pixxors please!
Funnay. I've had one of those on top of the Hong fridge for 2 years now, waiting to use it on a challenge car. Challenge-sized fuel cell was discussed.
so what would be the challenge worth of that airbox? $.10 or the value of the beer?

You only have to pay for what ended up on the car, no? So let's hope that's just the 10 cents.
I certainly hope so.. I am sure a LOT of challenge cars have some beer in them
Here's his photobucket account for a few more pictures:

And his car domain account with MUCH more info:

To the original poster, don't take some of these harsh posts as ANYTHING but pure excitement. There are a lot of people on this board that are chomping at the bit for more information.

Nothing better than an original idea executed with style. Very nice, would also love to see it run.
Yeah, I was doing that car domain site, but I got tired of posting all that body work stuff. For that matter, I got tired of doing all that body work too, but eventually it got done.
For those interested, the engine is a 1.6TD out of a '85 Quantum that I bought on fleabay for $400. It's been rebuilt with second oversize pistons, new bearings, high output oil pump, etc. For performance mods it has euro spec GTD injectors, an A4 Jetta TDI variable nozzle VNT 15 turbo blowing through a 944 Turbo intercooler, a long runner GTI gasser intake manifold, and a 2-1/2" stainless exhaust system. Most importantly though, it has an injection pump modified by Giles at Performance Diesel in Markham, Ont. For those who don't know, Giles is sort of the Smokey Yunick of V Dub diesels Judging from the performance of similarly built engines, it should make around 110 hp and 160 ft/# of torque. The engine is mounted to the original Porsche gearbox using a Kennedy adapter and drives through one of their stage 2 clutches.
The car is entered in this Septembers' Targa Newfoundland Rally in the Touring equipped class and will be running the whole event on 100% biodiesel. To see more about that, follow this link to my friends site:

While there, please take note of our fund raising efforts for the hearing impaired. We are asking for the donation of 1 cent per mile for the 1400 mile event. If any of the forum members here have been affected by hearing loss in their families, or if you are just interested in helping out, please feel free to send a contribution of any size.
Lots to do yet, and the car has to be in Rochester, NY (200 miles away) next Wednesday for promotional pictures, so forgive me if I don't have a lot of time to spend on the forums --
