Skimming the rules, I couldn't quite decide how it would be handled. But if I brought my DIY maxQ datalogging bits and pieces, could it get used in car without being in budget?
I know it has the potential of improving autox times... so it could be considered a benefit in that regard. I honestly just want to log data for fun... but if allowed, let the driver use it to get faster.
Basically its netbook, 45buck gps and 30buck software package.... that wouldn't fit within budget if all those things were tallied up.
Forgive me if this has been addressed, I didn't find anything during a few quick searches.
Thoughts?

I don't see why it should be. I'm sure a lot of folks stick video cameras in their car that aren't in the budget, and I don't see any real performance advantage on a run-to-run basis for either.

The one thing one must be careful of is what is a tool and what is part of the system. For instance, if you ECU uses a WB O2 sensor, and you log it to tune it- the WB is part of the budget, since the ECU uses it. If it's just for logging, I agree with Angry.
If you are a good calibrator, you can really take advantage of this, BTW- have it in there, but don't use it. I can say that I did. Well, in all honesty, I couldn't get the circuitry to work together, so the WB sensor would never be accepted by the Tech II. I let too much smoke out.
Anyway- there are some fine lines in some systems. For a GPS based driving tool- I'd call it a tool- even if you are measuring a "torque curve" with your Iphone.

It would seem to me that if the wideband is just running a gauge, then it maybe shouldn't count. But if it's feeding info to a Megasquirt, then it definitely should.

So is this saying that aftermarket gauges (boost, temp, wideband, volts, ect) would not count towards the challenge budget if they are only used for diagnostic purposes? Also what about oil, antifreeze, spark plugs do those count? Just trying to work on the build sheet and wouldnt mind clearing up and extra slack in the budget
I've always counted gauges and plugs. Oil and antifreeze are "consumables," IIRC.

Wideband 02 devices and sensors that are not permanently mounted or data acquisition devices do not.
Oill/antifreeze/liquids do not count.

Wheels777 will be glad to see this, albeit a little too late for this year's effort since he hit the road yesterday.
OTOH, knowing him, he's got some demon tweak in the trailer that would put him $4 over budget, and by removing his 7 qts of oil will finally be able to install. will we finally see a challenge car go sub-10.50's? stay tuned, bitches. stay tuned.
FWIW (very little, i know), i've always counted any lubricants and coolants that i've replaced. because of their replacement intervals, especially compared to a true "consumable" like gasoline, i've always thought of them as "part of the car".
I thought the Datsun went 10.47 or something? Either way, I think the car certainly has the potential, but it's coming pretty much un-tuned, which is a first for Andy. On the other hand, he is some kind of wizard so he'll probably have it lined out after a pass or two. Either way, jaws will drop. The car is dead sexy.
