I know that the Challenge rules state that the vehicles have to be 4-wheeled production passenger vehicles- but I have always been under the impression that this was primarily to prevent motorcycles from competing given the considerable difference in performance/handling/cost from traditional cars, and I wasn't sure if anyone had ever asked about bringing a true 3-wheeled car like a Reliant Robin or, as is the case in what I'm considering, a rather modified Daihatsu Midget.

I think you want to make a phone call to Holly Hill.

It would be pretty cool to see the Elio make it (Well, first to production. Then to depreciation... THEN to the Challenge! )
There was the funky rotary powered bmw that year.... or did it have 4 wheels too? nope Google search shows 4 wheels, though in its stock configuration it might as well have 3.
Just add an unsprung, but free to move link off the back with a caster wheel on it. Technically 4 wheels, only three of them do anything resembling suspending the car...
I'm imagining the pro's face when they get asked to autocross a 3 wheeler.
Seems like taking those cars on an autox course would be a major safety issue. Unless your modifications include making the front have two wheels and one in the back.

I doubt it would pass the SCCA safety regs.
Are you aspiring to win the most spectacular fail? If so I think your reliant robin idea is fantastic. Maybe treat it like bowling and go for the high score taking out cones while sliding on the cars side.
