Read the Schroth install link I posted. It's got all the angles, diagrams, etc.

Glancing through, I did see that earlier. Thanks!

I meet a lady through work. We got talking about cars and she mentioned that she had two cars behind the pump house she wanted gone. One is a 69 Camaro that's so far gone I couldn't ID it. Her ex's friend took the VIN plate because the car started coming apart when they went to pull it out years ago. It does have snowflakes on the rear and I think a 9 inch rear. It appears to have been drag raced from the looks of the rear suspension. The rest is scrap metal.  The other one is a unknown year Jeep CJ. It's about 50% rust and 50% Jeep. Only the front half of the body is there. But there is a roll bar.

There's a lean to on the pump house that's fallen down. She implied that she would take removing it as trade towards the vehicles but if I were buying the vehicles I'd remove it anyway. I'm thinking I'll offer $300 for the two vehicles and she gets the lean to pulled out plus two iron oxide factorys removed.

Do I FMV my labor to tear out the lean to or count it as the normal part of buying old rusty vehicles that sit behind pump houses?

your labor is likely worth more than FMV on those. but may be a few parts to sell off.If the VIN is gone get a bill of sale. 1 VIN gone and 1 camaro dissappeared. had a chance to do that with a 69  396 SS RS Convertable. wish I had they are worth some bucks Today.

Sorry, been a very very busy week for me.

Cover that exhaust with a firewall.

Harness definitely needs to be by the seat, not on the other side of that tunnel.

Harness can be wrapped around the cage. Don’t need a tab or anything unless it’s near a bend in the harness bar that could allow it to slide forward/up.

You would need to FMV your labor.

I can work with that. Thanks.

I am new to fuel injection and the challenge budget. I am sure megasquirt is similar, but in my case, I am using a stock computer and HPtuners.

Question 1: How are things like tuning laptops, and devices like HPtuners handled with the budget? May I datalog the car during the event without including these in the budget? They are tools after all. I've used them on several vehicles already.

Question 2: Could I cover my wideband with a piece of electrical tape instead of completely removing it to not include it in the budget? It does not add performance, and it is a pain to remove,  just  to reinstall after the event. I'll do it if I have to. Would like to avoid it if I can.

In reply to TheV8Kid :

We have always assumed that if the laptop was in the vehicle during runs for data logging that it was then a part of the car (it's used for a performance advantage).

But if it is only shop based or used in the pits, its a tool (like a timing light).

This would be the same if it was logging the onboard computer, or GPS logging the track while driving (determining driving line)

I just always heard only what's on the car counts to budget so I'd assume if it's on the car it has to count towards budget.

So, I would still like to get an official ruling, but what I have gathered is, remove the o2 sensor. I still don't think my question on the laptop has been answered though. I'm sure there have been teams in the past that have run around the autocross with a laptop in the passenger seat. I can't say I have seen it, but I haven't really been paying attention either. Carburetors don't need computers, so it's never really been something I have thought about.

Yep, sorry, but I know what your dad would say if I let you get away with leaving the wideband attached during competition! winkIf it's on the car during competition, it counts in the budget.

If you're competing with a laptop in the car, it counts in budget. If you do an autocross run, decide your tune is bad, put the laptop in the car and drive around the paddock, adjust the tune, then remove it and do another autocross run, then it doesn't count in budget.

RE: My Firewall for the exhaust previously mentioned.

How sealed does a this firewall need to be? I have 2 pieces pictured that were free to anyone scrap that I figure I can use, but they wouldn't be perfect fit, nor would they be air tight or anything (see vent holes in side of the black panel.)

Starting with the Computer Cover May be a bit easier but the vents will let in LOTS of Hot Air, and I'm sure you know that. the other piece is the one I would use.  I think I would cut off one side,  then bend a tab like down the edge, like what you see in the photo to be the mounting edge. A Steel table and a rubber hammer.

I'm not terribly worried about the hot air at the moment. This is really just to have it "legal" for the challenge because once I'm back I'm trowing the challenge budget out the window and going to go over the entire car to make everything nice as well as street legal.

The goal is to prevent fire from coming in, so computer vents are bad. The other piece looks good, though.

So, working on the budget spreadsheet, and I've got a question about shipping costs. I have several large orders from RockAuto of parts for the Rampage, and included in those orders are a few parts that I'm quite possibly not going to end up using (either because I didn't end up needing it, or because I may not have time to put it on the vehicle). In some cases the parts in question are rather heavy and obviously cost a good bit to ship (like the CV axles I hope to not need). Also, the budget sheet seems to want only one item per line- and the example seems to support that.

So, actual question:

For orders of multiple parts, how should the shipping costs be handled on the budget sheet? Proportional to the cost of the item ( {cost of item/total cost of order} * shipping cost )? Divided equally between all of the items in the order ( Shipping cost / # of items in order )?

And since it relates to this...

Does each line on the budget sheet need to be one individual part? Or should multiple part orders be a line and either list all the parts in the 'Item' field or just refer to the receipt?

It would be somewhat easier if after you've placed the order RockAuto would show you the cost from each warehouse like it does before you order, as several items shipped on their own and thus the exact shipping cost would be right there.

And since I'm thinking about it (and am lazy and don't want to read through all the pages again), how exactly do we handle free shipping through Amazon Prime? Just, $0 for shipping? Or do we have to include the cost of membership? What do we do if we don't pay for it ourselves and just mooch off our parents' membership? wink

Wait, what??? Isn't the whole point of the challenge that labor is free? If anyone could go up to her and have gotten the same offer of doing the removal work to receive the vehicles in trade, why would it have to be included at FMV?  How do you even approach finding that?
