Is it legal in SCCA and NHRA to run the positive battery cable through the passenger compartment? Battery will be in spare tire well. Car is a hatchback, so spare tire well will have a sealed lid on it. But can I run the cable inside the cockpit, from the spare tire well up to and through the firewall? A "yes" would make my life really simple.
I don't believe NHRA specifies anything about battery cable rounting.
If you think about the many challenge cars that have had a battery mounted in the passenger compartment you'll remember that most had at least some portion of the positive battery cable in the passenger compartment. You'll also realize that most haven't used an NHRA approved battery box. I think cable routing would be the last thing inspectors might cite you for....
here's a Moroso NHRA approved box for mounting in the passneger compartment. You can clearly see that some portion of the battery cables would have to be routed inside the passenger compartment:
I think you're fine, Pat....
The SCCA solo rules do not mention battery cable routing that I could find.
Use good quality cable and the corrugated cable covering.
In a hatchback, mount in a sealed box. If using a normal battery have a vent tube to the outside. Better to use a battery like an Optima.
Summit also has a good kit. More offerings on-line a Summit than in the catalogue.
thanks for the help, guys!

You're OK.
NHRA does say that your cutoff switch is supposed to cut both the battery positive and the alternator.
I know- you didn't ask that.

does NHRA require a cutoff switch if battery is relocated? if yes, i may just play dumb on that one.

99% sure on that one. I'll double check.
