Hi all.

I'm needing input.

I have an opportunity to buy an '06 Cobalt SS.  It's the supercharged model.  It's my brother in-law's car, it's sitting right now and he needs cash.  I can probably get it for around $300.

I know it need brakes, rotors and pads at least all the way around.  Probably needs the fluid changed as well.  It also needs tires.  It has two that are flat right now and he claims that he can't pump them up.  I haven't checked myself.  He also said something about it needing the intercooler water pump changed.  I'm sure there are some other things wrong with it as well.  It's going to need a left fender as someone backed into and put a big dent in it.  The rest of the sheet metal is straight and the paint looks good for the again.

He says that it doesn't have any mods done to it.  I have not looked at the interior so I'm not sure how bad that is.  I don't have the exact mileage but I'm pretty sure it's under 200K.  I need to follow up on this.

So my questions are does anyone know much about the market for the early SS Cobalts and do you think it would it would be worth buying this thing, fixing what needs fixed and then selling it?  According to the market guides like Edmunds, this model in good shape is supposed to be worth around $4200.  I can do the work myself but I don't want to get a lot of money in this thing and then not be able to sell it for at least what I have to put in it.

Any input is welcome.

Thanks

Mike

For $300 you can't go wrong really.  I'd grab it and then assess what it needs.  If it's too much then junk it and get more than what you paid.

I don't see how that's not a win.

$300 I would buy first and ask questions later. Part out is worth 5X that minimum. Runner is 10X easy.

I'm sure about any car sold with fresh brakes and tires that runs worth a damn and passes whatever local inspection/emissions requirements brings $3k minimum if flipping. As mentioned can easily make back you $300 if you have to part out. Just stuff like wheels, seats, any rare bits, cat, and send the rest to a "we buy junk cars" gets you probably $1k.

If you want to build a Goblin kit or do the 2k challenge, yes.  If not, no.

Buy it. If you end up not wanting it, someone on here will.

You definitely shouldn't buy it, and also you should probably provide me with the seller's contact details, for no particular reason at all.

Thanks guys!  I appreciate the input.

I'm thinking I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger and see how it goes.

$300 is disgustingly cheap

If your BIL is a decent guy i'd hand him the $300, spend some time getting it ready for sale & splitting the profit.  Save yourself the trouble of towing, getting it titled, etc (unless you want it as a driver).  You can probably find a set of used wheels w/tires already mounted for a few hundred bucks.

I wouldn't want a regular Cobalt for free...but for near-free I'd take a Cobalt SS as a driver until it got too expensive/needy.
