It's not a serious suggestion, really, but if the Thing is great, besides the third pedal, how about an electric Mini Moke?

25 mph is the only downside. These beach roads are strangely 45mph plus 10 everywhere. I love the idea of an electric conversion for a runaround vehicle. If we lived a little closer to school a golf cart may be the perfect solution!

The backseat is small but a beach-cruiser TJ fits your budget. Driving around with the doors off was way more fun than I thought.
They're popular for a bunch of reasons-price, aftermarket, uniqueness, etc. If you want to stand out from the crowd, or need a bigger backset, look at a Cherokee.
New option. What could I buy for 5 or 6K and stuff the LS/auto tranny into from my escalade?
Second new option. Can I cut the roof and pull the doors off the escalade without going to prison? Would that make the ultimate 4 door k5 blazersclade? Just tell me yes.
How do I get a soft top made for a custom roofless convertible escalade?
The template to your customized Escalade is in the link below. Looks like no real roof but a bit of sun shade.

If you're willing /capable of a LS swap then I would recommend changing VW Thing to automatic trans or even better Subaru 2.2L swap with automatic.
I have done an LS swap before, but going to some sort of midmounted tranmission, rear engined Subaru seems like a crazy endevor for some reason? Would this be fairly straightforward?
