Coil spring conversion, dual straight pipes, and A/T tires. It was pretty obnoxious and hoonable. Kind of wish it was still in my life.
Edit... can't tell if the pic is working. It's an 87 Lincoln MkVII

Ooh and it's got actual honesty in a CL ad: Let me be frank, it's a total hack job. things were hastily done to get the thing on the road.
Hmmm, did GRM break the ability to add links to the forums on purpose? Or am I just having a spaz attack?

FTW!
I'm glad its a long ways away. Someone go get it please!!
No forum is buggered up
$10k gets you an LS1 F body with a few grand left over for extra fun bits - suspension, headers, cam, spray, ect. Throw a big rear bar off a third gen on it and it becomes way too easy to hang the tail out. LOTS of cheap used parts out there and both the suspension and drivetrain are superior to any Mustang within budget. Crowds of pedestrians will thank you as well
V8 S10 could be done for probably half your budget and doesn't shave all the plastic-fantastic body panels the F bodies have, so therefore might withstand incidental contact a bit better. Body on frame probably helps in that regard as well. Downside is the handling potential won't be as great.
5.0 swapped E36 Bimmer would be fun as well. Hooning my old 328is in the snow was probably as much fun as I've had in any vehicle to date, just sooo easy to pitch the rear end out to whatever slip angle you desire and then reel it back in. I can only imagine a raucous, warmed over Ford small block under the hood would add to the experience.
You can buy an S197 for this price, it's lightyears better than a Foxbody or SN95
You can also buy an SN95 Cobra for this price.
I'm a Ford guy though, so I'm biased.
Based on my LS1 4th gen - don't. It was great at hauling its Kardashianesque ass down the road in a straight line, hopeless at everything else. Also enormous, a PITA to work on and blobby.
I feel no regret at what I did to that car.
Get a swb rwd V8 pickup (choose your poison) or a Fox body. Hooning is why the Fox body exists. Remember not to wear a shirt while hooning the Fox.

This is all I think about anytime I see the engine bay on one of these. Woof!
In reply to Keith Tanner:
Was yours on stock suspension? A set of Konis really goes a long way. They do kind of suck to work on though.
My ls swapped rx8 obsession is in this same pricing zone... Just found another to look at as the last was a train wreck. A tire smoking obnoxious train wreck...
I vote LS-powered 4th gen F-Body or a short bed 2wd GM truck with a rowdy small block.
If you really want to instill irreverent hatred (and my admiration), get a 3rd gen Camaro, paint it purple or teal add stupidly powerful SBC, and spin the tires to oblivion while wearing a mullet wig and denim jacket and blasting hair metal everywhere you go.
Lincoln Mk VII with all the mustang goodies... must use sidepipes or the loudest straight thru exhaust you can find

I didn't buy the car to be a Camaro, so I didn't pay much attention to the suspension. It did have a 4" tall high rise hood on it over the stock intake manifold, though. If you were drag racing, you'd have to make sure you lined up in the right hand lane. Wouldn't be able to see the lights if they were on the other side...
Turbo brick. Turn up the boost, install straight pipes and roast tires. I should have never sold mine. Common to swap a 5.0 and T5 in.

I can't believe that I forgot that idea. Basically follows along with my 2nd truck idea for dirt as well, mountains of suspension travel

Mmm. Turbo brick. 700s and 900s can be had super cheap. 200s are starting to creep up in price, at least by me. I also love the idea of 1st gen s10 + v8. And, of course, Fox bodies. Although, from what I've seen, nice ones are starting be worth a little something.

Guess i never thought of sub frame connectors as a big deal. I know they need them i had a bent 88 t top car to remind me of that for several years and it only ran bottom 13s.
There not under appreciated in stock suspension drag racing by any means though. That i can agree with.

Fun? Check
Short on creatures? Check
Loud? Hughbetcha
Obnoxious? Creative interpretation
Ugly? Eyes of the beholder.
Personally I'm coveting a 50s Brockway semi truck dually as a Speedster build.
