Bought it for $400, autocrossed it for 5 years, had maybe $1000 in it after brakes and maintenance, sold it to a scrap yard for $400 when the rust got too bad. Had over 200k on the clock.
When I lived in L.A. the amount of cheap, rust free stuff was everywhere. I set a $500 cap on stuff I bought. I was also shocked at how frequently the rich folks would put a free Mercedes or BMW on CL. Their threshhold for when a car's value becomes no longer worth the hassle seems to be higher. Me... I'll take a wasted car and try to part it out for $20 before I give it away free.
Some of mine over the years. Bold type means I still have it.
74 Maverick 115k, 302, $500
62 Caddy SDV with a zillion miles, $1500
84 Honda CB750, traded for a busted laptop
73 AMC Hornet wagon, 7k miles (not kidding), $1500
83 Corolla wagon, $200
97 Lincoln Mk VIII with 70k, $3000
06 Express AWD with 80k, $6000
We have the Miata, the M3, the 911 and a 2014 Civic Si purchased new.
We paid the most for the Civic.
The Saab is my most recent at $750
The Boat was $700
The MR2 was $400
The Civic was $500 IIRC
The Jetski was $250
The ATV was free
That's purchase price only of course, all needed something, some needed everything.
My poor wife suffered through me driving a host of $500-$1200 cars from around 1993 to about 2003.
After that I went crazy and spent $9996 on a Protege ES and then replaced that with $17,000 worth of Subaru. My fancy 10K Italian dirt bike was my treat to me for a big promotion.
In the past 12 years my salary has doubled but old habits die hard. My current pre-retirement treat to myself is going to be either a 914, Cayman or air cooled Formula Super Vee..............I can afford it but the prices of those are such that I may just buy myself a newer nicer F500 because 10K will get me what I want..............I like the feeling of being able to write a check for what I want versus payments.
