I'm trying to change the valve cover gasket on my Honda accord. Someone prior to me, glued in the old gasket with some death grip substance and I'm finding it nearly impossible to remove it. I can only pull out tiny pieces with assorted pliers and small screw drivers. Permatex gasket remover is not helping. I'm afraid to put to much heat to it and warp the cover. Anyone know what chemical would soften its grip?

Edit: I should mention that it is a rubber gasket glued into a recessed groove.

I've used the permatex gasket remover before, and not only did it remove the old gasket no problem, but all of the paint from the valve cover. So you are definitly dealing with something else.

I've had marginal luck with the Permatex stuff on super-old gaskets. I had better luck with Goof-Off. Plastic scraper still required of course.

I bet it was glued in there. Liquid nails, etc. wire wheel might do it

Seconded. This is the cheap and easy way.

If you have some "good" paint remover you can try that. It will remove most gasket residue.

When I did a head job on my Nissan truck the last time, I had the dickens of a time getting all the remnants of the old HG off the block. And I didn't use anything on it when I installed it last time. I tried everything in my arsenal and nothing would get it off. I did the best I could with a razor blade.

In reply to jimbbski: Paint remover might work. I thought I had some at home but no luck. I'll pick some up tomorrow and see what happens.

This was my first thought but I don't have a true "pick a part" near me. The junk yards near me probably won't let me remove the valve cover and not take the engine. I went there to pick up a steel wheel and the tire was like new and they had to check to see if the other tires were in the same condition. If they were I would have to buy all 4. Apparently, they don't want to break up a set.
