You know, I'm thinking this actually wouldn't be a bad series of articles for the magazine. 1 article per issue, guest columnists. Call it "The Apologists Guide to Racing". Have someone who is passionate about their particular brand of motorsports try to convince the rest of the world that 
I would suggest you start with the one closest to home. There's got to be an autocross club nearby - grab the most nimble vehicle in your fleet and spend a day with them. It's the cheapest way to get going on pavement in a real car. If, after a couple of sessions you like the general idea but want some more speed mixed in - Track Day/HPDE is next.
My most nimble vehicle right now is my SS with Bilsteins and lowering springs. This will be fun.
Wow! That ride will cause a stir in the pits. It'll probably also back up the corner worker/pylon replacers! Way Back!!

The local Impala club does some autocrossing. They're not terrible if set up well. Ok, maybe terrible, but in a fun way.

Curtis, you are missing something important if you are not there. It is a perfect fit for your skillset.
Plus, it doesn't matter WHAT you bring. There are virtually no rules and no classes.
Enjoyed reading this thread actually. ive only ever drag raced and have been curious about trying some other motorsports
