I'm looking at tires for the T-bird. The stock tire is a 225/60 16. I've also found a 235/60 16. The difference being almost an inch in tread width and about a half inch in diameter. Would I rather have the shorter narrower tire or the taller wider tire?

On something where torque is not an issue, I would say you want the wider taller tire.
a taller tire might look kinda goofy on the car, and it will throw the speedo off..

Not if he's rolling on Cragars and puts air-shocks on the back.
I'll have to look into the 235/55s. I'm not sure what's available in that size. I'm looking for something fairly sticky.
The speedo already reads a little on the slow side now so that isn't an issue.
Yeah, they might look a little stupid, but an inch of width makes it tempting.

What you want is a 245/60-15. Best of both worlds!

except for the part where he needs to buy new wheels- if 15" wheels will even fit on the car..
of course, i'm assuming it's one of the late model retro T-birds here...
Well, of course he needs new wheels. 16" wheels suck
Actually, I just missed the part where it was a T-bird. Any that would have come with THAT size factory will have an oddball offset/bolt pattern that makes finding wide 15" wheels difficult.
I know they exist, since I know someone who used to drag race an MN10, but difficult.
New bobos on the bird.
It isn't one of those horrid retro birds either.

It's an 89 Super Coupe.
I ended up going with the 235s. I figured the extra width would be worth it. We'll see, I've only driven it about 5 miles since they were put on.

Curious, how does 10mm in width become "almost an inch" Diameter difference is closer to 1/2".
Just being picky.

Same as the taurus, mark VIII, older volvos, the new 5 lug focus, etc.....theres a lot out there that uses 5x108mm, you just have to find them.

Because tire sizes are not regulated, and different manufacturors run larger and smaller.
This is why my 245/45r17 star specs ran an 3/4 of an inch wider than the 245/45 v700 victoracers they replaced........
In reply to iceracer:
Sumitomo lists the tread width on the 225s as 7.4" and the 235s as 8.2". That's almost an inch .8 to be exact. And the diameters are 26.8 and 27.3, that's exactly a half.
I'm planning on taking a cruise with it in the morning. I'll let you know whether the extra almost an inch is worth it.
