I just had a really loud rattling that just started from behind me on my Civic. I am thinking it might be a heatshield on the exhaust. I don't have a jack with me at school other then the one that came with the car so I can't really get under it. Any ideas on what it might be?
its your jack rattling in the trunk!
(does it vary with RPM? if so, then its probably exhaust)
It could be that or a loose exhaust hanger. My Subaru's exhaust heatshield rotted off its mounts and rattled like crazy when I first got the car. Small hose clamps and strategic bending did the trick.
The lower the RPMs the more noise it makes. My sister has an older Civic and it had a heatshield come loose. If it is a heatshield can I just pull it off or do I need to tie it down.
often it is easier to put a metal hoseclamp over the shield then to remove it
(the dealership did it to fix a rattle on my moms 2.5rs impreza)

My '95 DX has couple of EPIC exhaust rattles at the moment.
I'm a) too lazy to tear off the heat shield on the cat--which is almost definitely one of them. Rattling heat shields are a Honda trademark. Some cars throw rods or get haunted by electrical demons, Hondas get noisy heat shields. ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/icon_cheesygrin.gif)
and b) too cheap to go to NAPA and get a new axleback muffler section--a baffle in the muffler has let go creating this lovely buzzing.
Ah, old cars...
