1979 Mini 1000

Today I finished installing the clutch slave cylinder and starter solenoid on my problematic Mini. The other day the car was running fine and the starter engaged perfectly. After installing everything, I go to start the car. Click. Try again. Click. I go through and checked all the connections. Same thing. I pulled the starter and bench tested it. Seemed to work fine with a battery hooked up and no flywheel resistance. I then noticed the top spring on the starter was cracked. Would this stop the starter from working? I am at a loss right now. I know the ignition circuit is working because I can hear the solenoid clicking.

Maybe a bad starter ground? The chassis to engine ground looks good.

The solenoid can click but not work, confirm you're getting power at the starter. I'm not familiar with that type of starter but broken springs are usually an issue.
