Challenge car. Have lots of build-up that we know about in the radiator. Unknown about the block, but the jackets lookd clean when we screwed it together.
Weve run prestone flush and tons of water through it. But i want to nuke it from orbit just to be sure.
What works? I heard something about vinegar, but dont know how true.
Purified water after a thorough draining, run for a bit, cool and drain, rinse, repeat until clean or you get tired of buying gallons of purified water.
Final fill is with normal amounts of purified water, antifreeze and maybe some water wetter if necessary.
CLR?
As mentioned, running distilled water through it for a while will help. The deposits/minerals will absorb back in to the pure water eventually. Works with your plumbing too

Cummins makes a cooling system cleaner that works great, only downside its nasty stuff and DO NOT get it on yourself.
Vinegar for a couple of heat cycles will work. Don't leave it in for more than a few hours and flush well afterwards, maybe with some baking soda added to the first flush.
If you brought it to a shop they would "boil it out", is that something we can do at home?

Why not for more than a few hours?

It could start to eat away at things you want to keep, like gaskets and seals. IIRC mad_machine once wrecked his discovery's water pump by leaving vinegar in the cooling system for a couple of days.
I did, but the crud I got out of a "newly rebuilt" engine was sight to behold
