Today I picked up a used Ford 9" axle housing and 31 spline axle shafts.  I'll have the housing sand blasted and powder coated after I have fill and drain plugs welded in.  The axle shafts are 1970 OEM Ford 31 spline shafts that I'll reuse with my rebuilt center section with new bearings, seals and retainer plates.  How should I clean the axle shafts?  Solvent and a green scrub pad, bead blast, fire, shotgun???

I just went at the same project Thursday with brake cleaner and old t shirts.

Axle shafts are easy.  Axle tubes are probably more important, and certainly harder to clean.  Solvent, broom handle, rags, repeat until boredom strikes.  Look for crevices that might trap stuff, although a 9 inch has fewer of those than a 12 bolt or similar.

Toilet bowl brush and solvent for cleaning axle tubes.
