Well, you can't accuse me of leaving time - or distance - on the table.
My favorite was a few years ago when I was running our MINI 'vert. At one event, there was this one cone that for whatever reason I was able to 'just' nip on almost every run, making the cone wobble but not fall over or go out of the box. The next day I take the car back to the g/f's house and then I see the cone marks on the door and had to quickly get them off before she saw them.
I remember a slow-motion auto-x video posted here last year. One shot was of an Integra three-wheeling the inside rear wheel perfectly over the base of the cone.
You may not be leaving distance, but not knowing the next element it looks like you early apex'd it, so you are leaving time.
Oh no, it's definitely a late apex line. I preach that religously to all the novices, and I practice what I preach. You can see it better in this video:

For you doubters, here's a closeup of the tire just skating over the base of the cone. It stayed in the box, too.
