Actually, I'm betting the Miata is semi-collectable in another 20 years. Not a truly collectible investment, but viewed the way we look at old British roadsters from 30-40 years ago.
They will be as collectible as a 1st gen RX7, too many available even after nearly 30 years for the 1st examples
I'd think the best predictor of collectability is "How many rabbid fanboys of the car today will have more money than sense in 20 years and want one now that they can finally afford one?" Based on that criterion, here's my guess at what's going to be collectable.
Lotus Exige / Elise is the most likely one on that list, followed by the Mustang GT500 KR and S2000. These all have plenty of drool factor. The Smart car might become the VW Bug of extreme eco-hippies, but I'm not sure of its chances with the car guy community at large. (And the second gen Prius is probably going to be the car for eco-nostalgia.) The Solstice / Sky aren't bad but may be sort of like British roadsters now that don't command quite the same prices as muscle cars but are still collectable.
Stuff that isn't on their list that I'd peg as ones to watch: Fourth generation Supras, definitely. 5.0 Mustangs might be on the list from guys looking to relive their drag racing memories forged back when they were just cheap cars. 240SXs and AE86 Corollas because of the drift craze. Miatas also are likely to have something of a cult following in the future. And to really impress aging riceboys with as much JDM nostalgia as possible, wait until R32 Skylines are old enough to legally ship over here.
