I have a collector's insurance on one of my vehicles but my carrier (Hagerty) will not offer similar coverage on my CRX. (Not old/rare enough according to them). The CRX is driven rarely (never to work) and it's use falls under the guidelines of all collector insurers' guidelines that I have seen.
Anyone been able to procure collector's coverage on a CRX or similar vehicle? If so, with who?

Really? I have collector insurance on my '88 325is with Hagerty. They didn't bat an eye... Strange...
The underwriters make the decisions as to what is "collectible" or worth it for them to insure. They probably see a BMW as more collectible than an old Honda.
Try Grundy Insurance. I insured both my '06 Miata and '04 GTO with them, no problem at all.

Condon and Skelly? I'd shop around there are many many CC insurers out there...
I've had good luck with Hagerty on my Porsche and '65 Mustang Fastback, but they wouldn't touch my '96 Miata even though it sees fewer miles than the other two ever did.
I sent emails to nine collector car insurers today. Trying to feel them out. I'll report back with my results in case anyone else is in my boat.
So far there have been outright refusals from Hagerty ("...unfortunately still do not have a program to properly cover your 1991 Honda CRX") and Leland West ("Our company is not seeing it as a collectible at this time").

american collectors insurance. If its over 15 years and garaged they will cover it. Only company that would touch my Meyers Manx and good folks to boot.

The weird part is when I added the BMW to my policy, I jokingly asked the rep if we could add our '07 MINI 'vert as well, since we basically use it like a classic. She said in PA, no, but since the car is registered in NJ, it's possible...
As an asside, who can I get collectible type insurance through that will let me use my vehicle? I have a 1963 falcon and a 1954 Willys truck that I acutally want to drive.. Like to work and stuff. Collectors insurance generally says no-no. I'd even like to GASP Tow with the willys.. Is this possible asside from just getting standard car insurance and then being sad if they get wrecked/stolen.
In reply to nocones:
This is relevant to my interests...
I'm wondering if the answer has something to do with the phrase "agreed value", but am not sure how to combine the agreed value (probably higher than they'd otherwise value it) with whatever nebulous information they look at to figure out the likelihood of having to pay out if the vehicle's actually used on a regular basis...

Yep American Collector's here too. Have everything "toy" related covered from the '67 Barracuda to the '96 Dakota Sport.
Is the CRX stock or modified? And I'm wondering if that impacts their decision.
It is a modified Hf, but I don't think it mattered much to Hagerty. If it were a '68 Mustang you'd probably call it a mild resto-mod. The exterior is mostly stock but it is lowered w/ 15" Rota Circuit 8s. It has an Si engine & trans, DC Sports header, CAI, SS cat-back exhaust, Koni/GC coilovers, ST rear sway bar, Hasport d-series mounts, Hawk pads, Grant 13" steering wheel - mostly just stuff to optimize the engine/brakes/suspension. The car is mostly just built to my liking and doesn't class well in SCCA Solo (SMF).
I can write insurance through hagerty, at least in Michigan, and for them to cover my 1990 Miata, I would have to have a daily driver less than 10 years old. And my ranger is 1999... If the Miata was a 1989 (which doesn't exist, even though slot of people think they do) my daily driver could be up to 15, iirc.

If you want to drive it to work more often than once a month on a sunny day and/or use the vehicle to tow with, then I don't know of any collector company that would write a policy for you. Their target market is the garage queens that are used for shows/parades or a Sunday cruise. They view anything other than that as a liability risk not worth the minimal premium they charge.

You may check out NCM Insurance (it's not just for Corvettes). Here's what they say on their website: "We offer “Nine-to-Five Driver” option that allows you to drive your Corvette or collector car to work up to a couple times a week". Their website is at ncim

Do you occasionally drive it to a Cruise Night or a car club meeting on the way home from work?
One more outright refusal - this time from Condon & Skelly.
American Collectors and Chubb have both quoted me coverage and I am leaning towards American Collectors.

What does a collector car insurance offer that a normal insurance doesn't? I have full insurance on my 'paid-cash-for' '91 Miata, and I could have gotten hobbyist or collect plates on it. (Don't know what that would have done to the insurance side of it though...)

varies from state to state but in NJ its a difference of $100 a month for normal coverage or $100 a year for collector insurance.
Also most collector polices are agreed value policies which pay out on a pre determined value no matter what.
For instance the Wartburg is insured for $10,000. If it wrecks, burns, whatever there is no question of value, if totaled it pays out $10,000, no questions asked.

ACI has been awfully good to me, I'd go with your leanings.

In my case it is about a quarter of the cost.
Plus in the event of an accident a 91 Miata (or 91 CRX in my case) is worth next to nothing to a conventional insurance company. I'm guessing that even the most minor of accidents would result in my current insurer totalling my crx and sending me a check for a few hundred bucks.
I have the 97 Range Rover under Grundy coverage, not many limits beyond having two alternative cars (his and hers) and the 3000 annual miles

Correct. They offer a much lower premium than conventional insurance. Plus, they usually have agreed value on collision coverage. So if your car is totalled, you know in advance how much your getting. Also, they often have a $0 deductible, instead of $500 or whatever.
Keep in mind that it's not the cost of your collector car that they are that concerned with...unless your collector is a Bugatti Veyron or something. It's the liability coverage. They're collecting a few hundred bucks in premium. If you cause an accident, they may have to pay $5000 or $10,000 for your car. But they may have to pay 5 or 10 times that much (or more) in liability of someone is seriously hurt.
