It's insurance renewal time and looking over my policy I see that 3 out of my 5 cars could be considered collector type cars. One is 45 years old, one is 30, and one is the 24 year old 911. It occurred to me that I might be better served for those cars with some sort of collector car insurance but I really don't know anything about it. Only the 911 is driven to work, the others will see pretty low miles. Some are stored covered, some not.
What are your experiences and who do I talk to about this stuff?
I'm in Texas if that makes any difference.
I'm very happy with Hagerty.
There are a lot of collector car policies out there. Some of the big carriers are Hagerty, Grundy and American Collectors. Shop around with them. A few words of caution from inside experience.
Read the policy language very carefully. Make sure you understand the restrictions and follow them closely.
Be sure to disclose exactly where the cars are garaged and if you will use any of them (i.e. the 911) to go to work.
Follow the guidelines. They can and will deny a claim if you don't.
My personal experience with having a collector car policy is that Grundy tends to be the most flexible. They allow you to take the car to work, as long as its' not your DD. I think the biggest challenge you'll have is the garaging situation. They want all cars in an enclosed and locked facility.

I have this type of insurance on my TR4A. The cost is $295 per year from Heacock and that includes a declared value of $25k. As long as it is not daily driver, you can insure it for cheap, depending upon the use. Definitely worth looking into and comparing your options.
I've been with Hagerty both in the UK and now over here and am very happy with their service, although I never had to put in a claim.
Hagerty will deny you coverage for anything heavily modified, raced, or stored outside.
Grundy, per telephone contact, doesn't seem to mind the modified/raced stuff, but you're not covered while racing.
I'm really close to pulling the trigger, but can't seem to find info on how well their claims process really works. I want to know I'm not gonna get the shaft if someone pulls a swwop and stop on me.

Their claim process works fine. As long as you're not doing something that's in clear violation of their policy (such as racing it, or they discover it's garaged outside, etc...), you'll have no troubles.

I had Haggerty with my mini. They were fine. No mileage limits, nothing really. They said it had to be in a locked garage and only drivers over 18. I'll look into Grundy for the 944 if they don't have problems with heavily modded stuff. Like others have said, shop around and I'd to all my correspondence via e-mail. That way all conversations are in writing.
Hmmmmm..... the comments here and reading around a bit leads me to believe that the whole locked building thing is important. Until that happens I don't have a car collection, I just have a yard full of old crap. Off to work on the garage!
I saw over the weekend that Grundy is now insuring collector cars for daily driving. I will look into that once I get my 80 Spitfire on the road.
Got to disagree about hagerty not insuring anything heavily modified. My fiat is covered with them and is very very modified. They know everything I've done to it and are fine with it. I have a 10k stated value policy

Is it stated value or agreed value? Stated value will not gaurantee you $10k if the car is totalled. Agreed will.
Stated. If it gets totaled i get 10k. I will admit on especially frustrating build days it was tempting.
