My sister is looking to replace her van, an '02 Windstar. Her current asking price is $500, and I have fist dibs on it, but there is atleast one other person interested. I might be comitted to buying it sooner.
Inspection is next month and it might need a brake job. If the shop does it, the price goes to $700. If do it, including buying parts, it is guaranteed mine for 500.
The only real issue I know of is the transaxle. It runs fine, but selecting reverse/drive/ect is a little hard. Should this worry me?
Aside from that, it has a 2 little "issues". The drivers side sliding door is difficult to open and close, not really concerned. The drivers seat has no support on the right side, an easy fix from the u-pull-it.
Thoughts?
My thoughts? Eww, isnt there something better you could find for $500? Dont those have issues with transmissions and head gaskets?
My sis-in-laws was purchased brand new in 2001. I shudder to think how much money she dumped into that piece of E36 M3 over the last ten years, finally selling it recently for (you guessed it) $500. Constant transmission problems and oil leaks for her. Sometimes cheap is expensive. I'd look for a $500 4.3 Astro.
I'm not really looking for something, just this is a family deal open to me.
And being the one doing most of the maintinance on it, it doesnt use much oil, sub 1qt/3000miles.
Challenge/lemons van?
Windstars have a problem with rear axles. I don't know if they even have rear axles but lately I've been running into lots of people who are dealing with a recall from Ford on the problem.
3.8 head and timing cover gaskets, repair followed shortly by crank failure.
Trans front seal failures.
Rear beam axle rusts in half in the middle.
They are ugly turds that should have been crushed at the dealership.
