Saab 900/9-3's are nearly free. With a tune, intake, exhaust, viggen IC they make like 290 ft/lbs

The Seville (STS) has been front wheel drive since the 70s or so. In the early Northstar era, it shared the same chassis with the Deville (DTS) just with a different wheelbase, IIRC.
Common for cheap and can be found in junkyards easily - VQ30DE-K or VQ35 Maximas, perhaps? mid-200s torque and easy to find for cheap these days.
The turbo Dodge 2.5l from the early 90s should be cheap, are super simple, turn up the boost and fuel pressure and make 300lb/ft. They also had forged bottom ends from the factory and are proven in all those crazy caravan drag monsters. Manual transmissions are less common than auto but still not exactly rare and there are several lsd options available.

I sure hope to do that with my nearly free Saab!

put some E85 in it... really wakes it up... i found that a 50% mix of E85 with regular 87 octane gave me the same mpg as regular gas, but as much "butt dyno" power as straight E85 in my 01 GTP.

The STS was technically a different car. The STS replaced the Seville in '05 and was available until 2012 and was RWD and AWD only. There was even a rare V with a blown 469hp Northstar.
It occurs to me that i have driven most of these cars.
Noone has mentioned yet that you could get a FWD Deville with a 4.9 for 3 or 4 years. Since i've driven all 3, it falls between the torque of the northstar and the FWD LSv8s. It's pretty impressive at first tip-in. I actually like those cars and wouldn't mind owning one. I dislike FWD Northstars very much.
My modified turbo dodges are the torquiest feeling FWDs i've ever driven, mostly due to the low weight. They CAN have a better torque/weight ratio than a 1000lbft diesel pickup if you lighten them. Traction problems in 3rd gear (manual, 55-85mph) are possible with a stock bottom end. I don't necessarily recommend them (even though i'm building 2 TDs right now, a spirit and a minivan). Ill answer any questions anyway.

STS was the 'performance/sport' trim level of the Seville in the 90s.
They took the Seville nameplate off somewhere along the line, I think. You had the STS and the SLS. I am not entirely sure what the difference was between the two. Supposedly the STS was the sport model and the SLS was the luxo model but they always drove the same to me. Slight horsepower difference between the two also, might have been done electronically or maybe just done in the marketing department.

Interesting, I will give it a try.

Hard to beat turbo Mopars for this whether it's the older 2.5 or newer 2.4.

Getting off-topic but how the engine reacts depends entirely upon the ECU and the size of the injectors.

it reacts amazing with the stock ecu and the stock injectors..
The Dodge 3.5 HO from the Intrepid/300C put down 250 ft/lb stock. They were put in the Prowler and the Charger, so you have options for FWD, AWD or RWD with an auto, manu-matic or manual. I have seen them turbocharged and procharged north of 300HP.

they Intrepid was fwd, but the engine was mounted longitudinally like a rwd car, so mounting them in a "normal" rwd car might be a chore.. and honestly, they aren't really that great of an engine with almost zero upgrade parts available..
