Does anyone else have commute heros? You know, the guys who you see every day on your commute driving something WAY out of the ordinary to their 9-5?
There are a few older american cars I see running around every day, including a flat black Corvair coupe, a red Mustang Mach 1, and a mid 70s Nova with a lumpy cam and skinnies up front. There's also an NSX and a R32 Skyline sedan that I see with some regularity. In Pennsylvania, the land of rust and potholes, everybody drives a <10yr old beige crossover, so seeing something like this on my commute really brightens my day:
My boss commutes in his lambo. He has over 10K miles on it already in 8 months. I don't commute a far distance anymore so I do t see too much.
Just about every day I see an R37 Skyline parked in the parking lot of the Hotel I pass on my way into the office. Not always the same spot, but in the same area behind the pool. Makes me think the Hotel Manager makes a decent salary at a Drury Inn.
There's a guy on my daily commute doing it in a new gtr. and another one in a late 60's behemoth Cadillac.
It's funny you mention the new GT-Rs, I see two of them around on particularly nice days- one of which is wrapped in totally obnoxious reflective gold vinyl:
There is a new gt350r that I see parked with some regularity at my local bank branch. One of these days, I'm going to have to stalk him at quitting time just so I can hear him fire it up and drive it away
I used to regularly see a Model A coming the other way on I-75 on my way to work. The guy worked at local body shop.
My commute is about 40 miles on I75 and I see a MS3 and a Skyline regularly, even in the winter.
They probably would say they see a slammed minivan on Volks everyday though...
We have a guy locally in a '69 bright yellow Camaro tubbed and caged with monster rear tires and little skinnies up front. He says that EVERYONE challenges him to race at lights. As if he needs to prove he can smoke a riced out civic in a car that stands out like a fluorescent tube top in church.
I feel pretty silly commuting in the CSPish Miata covered in stickers and big spoiler.

Driving ~50 miles each way to work, I see quite a bit, although for the past month I've been working in PA and driving the PA Turnpike, so I don't see as many interesting cars. But over the pas 16 years of commuting from lower Bucks, PA to central NJ via a lot of back roads, I see a few cars quite regularly:
I see a '69 Chevelle in NJ often. Regardless of weather - I've seen it in the snow. It's already pretty rusty, so I don't think the owner worries about it much. I think he also has a '69 El Camino as a back-up.
Nissan GTR is a common sight. I used to see one on I-95 heading south while I was going north.
A white late 80's Mustang GT - looks like the original owner. Again - all weather. There is a turquoise LX 5.0 hatch I see in NJ often as well.
There's a woman I see driving an older (70's/80's) Benz SL almost every day.
I used to see a Boss 302 Laguna Seca a few years ago, but haven't in awhile. Along the same ilk, I see a new Camaro ZL-1 a couple of times a month. It sounds glorious.
There's a yellow Elise I see on I-95 often.
I'll probably think of more after posting this...
Yeah, I see a GT-R pretty regularly.
You wouldn't think it unusual, but I see a guy commuting in an original Beetle daily. I'd guess early to mid 70's model. Don't really see many of them on the road anymore, so it's cool. I always pass him on I-75, when traffic is doing 75-80mph and he's chugging along at 65mph, probably with foot to the floor.
In the summer there is a guy who drives an NSX like the one you posted at least a couple times a week.
There is also an M Coupe (the shooting brake one) that I see pretty often.
I used to see a G8 GT every day (not that rare). Then one day I saw it wrecked on the shoulder. Haven't seen it since.
Almost forgot, someone is driving a Murano CrossCabriolet around too. Have seen it once or twice.
In reply to Ian F:
Have you found the custom electric Fiero creature yet? In the game of NJ commuting, I think that's the rarest Pokemon:
I used to see it all the time when I worked in Hackettstown.

In reply to ¯_(ツ)_/¯:
That's a new one for me, but one of my teammates lives up that way, I'll have to send him a picture and ask him.
Damn, that's hideous...

My father's friend ran a development company and got into collecting serious Ferraris. He had a special parking space at the office that nobody could park near, but he drove one or the other of those cars every day, no exceptions. They all looked like museum pieces or garage queens, and you could have eaten off the engine bays, but he drove one every damn day of the year.
I was passed by a Tesla doing 100+ on AC expressway last week. I do see a fair amount of near supercars (911 GT2 , F-Type Rs, Astons, Quatroporte GTS, etc) all the time though - because metro Hartford, NYC and PHL.

I see a bright red BMW 2002 pretty often. I briefly met the guy coming out of the store and tried to compliment him on his choice of conveyance. He was... not interested in engaging. I should probably shower more.
My commute heros are the old man in the straw hat that I pass driving an E28 M5 every day, and the guy I occasionally pass in the primer 356B coupe.
56 f100 thats at mcdonalds every morning. Older gentleman owns it. Restomod with a 306.
51 ford occasionally in the summer.
36 plymouth coupe, 71 duster, 70 dart all owned by one guy so it depends on what he drives that day.
My commute is just over 2 miles.
I usually pass a guy in an S2 Elise near my office. Passed him this morning. Exactly like this one, but the wheels are still silver:
Recently I've been seeing a nice restored E30 wagon on my commute, like this one but blue:
I sometimes also see a guy on an S1000RR with diplomatic plates, he likes to use the flat shift. Saw him this morning.

There are half a dozen Teslas in the parking lot where I work on any given day -- here in the bay area it's not a special car.
I have a coworker who commutes in the Porsche 356 that he restored.
Here in rusty, miles from charging ports and a dealer land, I've been amazed at the number of Teslas I've been seeing. The Bentley entries still surprise me as well as does the Quattroporte.
While not rare cars, very out of place in a land where uber and grubhub are still considered science fiction.
I often saw a guy driving around in a '65-'66 Plymouth Belvedere hardtop in Suwanee.

I've been working in NYC (upper east side) from monday-thursday for the last 6 months or so. My office is actually a block away from a jaguar specialist shop.
I see quite a few "GRM commute heros" in the area - quite to my surprise actually. These are all cars I have seen on a frequent basis within the few blocks I walk each day.
- at least 2 different NA miatas
- a mazda 323 that HAS to have been cheaper than the monthly rate for the parking space it occupies
- a 1970s mid-size american sedan in near showroom condition
- a 1980s woodgrain wagoneer, also in near showroom condition
- nice e46s and audis (clearly tuned, but understated)
Then there was an e92 m3 that looked great right up until I saw the words "Baja Panty" in vinyl on the windshield...stay classy.
I really need to start taking photos for the board.
My retired neighborn crises by my house every morning on his way to meet his buds for coffee in his porsche 550 replica with all the lettering from when it competed in the 2007 Carrera panamerica rally
