All.
I have a car that takes 275/40/17 tires and I can get Continental Race Rain Tires for almost nothing in this size.
This is a track day and autocross car... not really worried about classing.
My question is how similar/dissimilar are the two?
These will be used mainly in Dry conditions.
My autocross car takes the same size. Wanna hook me up with a set of four?
Id venture to guess that they are pretty much slicks with effective water dissipation properties.
Iirc rain tires wont hold up to heat, at all...autox maybe okay but hey if you get them for free try them out and see how well they work. May need a sprayer to cool them between runs?
I think they'll overheat on a track day, should handle autocross well especially if you spray them down between runs.

^What he said. Rain race tires won't be able to handle the heat of a dry track for very long.

Don't know an thing about car rains, but bike rains get really greasy (overheated) in a couple laps in the dry and are spent after an 8 lap sprint race at loudon. They are basicaly a super soft slick with lots of groves and because of the groves the rubber flexes way more than the slick generating a lot more heat. With out the rain to disappear the heat the are over heated in a very short amount of time.

yeah, in the dry, they won't last long (a session maybe) for track use
have you ever watched a race where the drivers are on wets and the track is drying ? you'll see them taking all sorts of weird lines hunting for water to cool the tires and even then they'll be slowing all the time
I was just going to say that.
To my recollection, Hoosier told me their rain tire is essentially an A6/A7 compound with rain grooves. Designed to take the place of an R6/R7 in the rain. So, yeah, it'll be designed for lower temps.
At some point they said their "dirt stocker" tire was actually better in the rain than most of their "rain tires". shrug
