Nissan, while we appreciate your efforts to answer the question tha had not been asked (Murano convertible) it should be noted that AMC beat you to the punch.

Perhaps they keep the good looking cars at home?

Nope. But at least they get interesting names instead of boring numbers. How about a Nissan Tiidan, Note, or Roox? Perhaps a Moco, Kix or Elgrand? I would hold out for a LAFESTA HighwaySTAR or perhaps a Wingroad. I would avoid the SYLPHY, Fuga or Latio however.

I don't really mind the Juke. I agree with the assessment that it'd be a lot cleaner if they scrapped the fender-blister lights and just made the fog lights the regular headlights, but overall a smallish-for-an-SUV, turbo AWD certainly isn't the worst thing on the road. Certainly not when it's parked next to a Cube.

Anyone remember the original 200SX from the late 70's?

Yeah, they've not been the best with styling at times, I suspect lately the influence of Renault is a big factor in their "styling crimes" and that isn't going to go away soon.

A friend turned down a Kia Soul for a Nissan Versa instead to replace the Honda that was recently wrecked. When she showed it off, I asked her why she was still driving a rental car. She was not amused. Well, she did buy a silver base model Versa, what was I supposed to think?

AGREED!!! And sorry if I missed the other thread. I was unaware that this crime agains humanity existed till I passed one on the highway.

Wow, even after being warned in the first post....I wasn't quite ready for that. Bleh!

How do you get approval for millions of dollars for R&D, marketing and so on for this thing?

I saw one (Murano vert, that is) and agree 1000%. And I used to think a Solara had a gigantic . . um . . . trunk. Wonder how long before they sell the "Kardashian Edition"?

Land Rover made a "Victoria Beckham" edition....

Now I'm sad because you've put it out there on the internet and someone will think it's a good idea.

Nissan in the 90' was the peak...

A friend has a Infiniti M35 and my mom has a 2006 Maxima. To me they are sort of bland, but not offensive that the Murano cabrio (although the Maxima's headlights are just plain WEIRD.). And when a function over form guy says something's ugly, man it's gotta be some kind of hideous.

I think Nissan's styling people decided to be really different so they'd stand out in a beige Camry sea and they have definitely accomplished that. Might have stepped a bit over the line, though...

I will disagree with you here - I don't think Nissan has had great styling on average since it left behind the "Datsun" moniker. Evidence of 90s Nissan awkwardness:

My older brother bought one with his college tuition. My dad took it away and sent him back to college, then Dad turned it into an ITB car. Had a lot of fun with it.

There was one running around the old neighborhood that was light blue with the Nismo fender flares on it, looked really good actually.

When we had two or three (for race spares) we thought about dropping an L24/28 in it to replace the L20B, never happened though.

The dogleg box on that car was interesting as well. The L20B, even in ITB trim, was a great motor and pulled on the supposedly superior flowing 2002's in our class. The Volvo's all had to cheat to keep up, so they didn't last too long. Our car was previously damaged, so the handling was never quite right (-2 degrees on the LF, +2 on the RF)

Lots of great memories of that car as a kid, I still think its ugly though.

Yup. That generation maxima was so classy. I actually really like the styling of the previous generation Murano too.

I've never had any use for the Murano whatsoever, and cutting the top off just makes it that much fuglier, more expensive, and less useful.

I am offended... :) as a 25 year career Nissan Design America designer/Studio Manager... The Altima (First Altima, of which you show the pix) was an ELEGANT car (which led to the later Infiniti J-30 design - a true classic) and the NX Coupe were very nice designs (and both won numerous Industrial Design awards on four continents). Perhaps I am biased, being the Studio Chief and primary designer of record for both of those vehicles during my 25 year career at the North American Design Center in San Diego. I also would defend my other work, the Nissan Pulsar NX coupe. On the other hand, late in my career, I had to work on the commercial vehicle shown earlier, and the Cube - both of which seemed to have tremendous potential but turned out... not so good. I am VERY grateful that I retired and left the organization long before they did the Juke.

This Pulsar: well proportioned, looks good. Even the Sportbak, while unusual to say the least, wasn't completely hideous.

This Pulsar:

not so nice.

FWIW: I'd like to have a NX2000 as an IT car or similar. It would certainly stand out and I actually sorta like the styling. Its best attributes are short wheelbase and reasonably light weight.

I know what you mean. Back in the days of the VW 'teardrop' wheels, there was a guy around town who had painted the wheels 'body color'; uh, no. They were about two shades brighter red than the car. Plus he had them mixed up and it just about drove me batE36 M3 whenever I saw the car.

EDIT: The only good thing about the Murano convertible is it takes the 'most gawdawful eccentric idiotic styling evar to get railroaded through the board' spotlight off of Chris Bangle.

As... Interesting, as the current Nissan line up is, at least it isn't an endless line of beige available in Sm-XL, like some other companies.
