Hello everyone!  I have a 2012 NC Miata with Advan A052 245 40 17's with probably 2800 street miles + 10 autocross runs. Still in very good condition. Hit a curb on the parking lot and there is a small crack on side wall on one of the tires. No bent rims or anything. Given the safety aspects, I think my best options are to change the tire. My car is not a daily driver just a week end car with occasional auto-x duties with 1 or 2 autocross events or so in 3-4months.

Should I change just one tire? Any major disadvantage with  changing just one tire? or change at least two tires together ?

Will go with Advan A052's if I can get away with changing just one tire. If I have to get two tires,  there are options like Falkens RT660 or RE 71R etc too.  Price wise all are $190 to $220 price range per tire.

Appreciate your suggestions

Pics of the damage?  Believe it or not I've encountered sidewall damage that was purely cosmetic, and was able to run the tire all the way to the wear bars without issue.

Can you get the A052 in your size at the moment? Might consider that.

This happened  some time back and I have driven carefully through regular roads and may have put in 200 miles or  so. Knowing that the tire has a crack always prevents me from having some fun through my usual back roads smiley

Change it if you are uncomfortable.  But put it on the back, not the front.

I can't totally tell from the photo but it looks like a superficial delamination with none of the cords cut. So maybe ok, maybe not.

If you bring it to any major tire store their policies are usually "all sidewall damage is dangerous and unrepairable".

I would personally, in this situation, replace just the one tire. 2800 miles and 10 autocross runs is still basically brand new, even in a summer performance tire. I probably wouldn't think too much about what corner I'm putting it on.

That said, if you're looking for more or less back end grip, this could be an opportunity to explore a different setup with different tires front and back. I'd also unfortunately be making the decision based primarily on the budget.

Another vote for just one tire.

It looks a minor crack to me also. No cords, not that deep. As seen in the photo, I am putting some force on that flat head  screw driver to pull out the out layer but that's all it come out.  If this damage was on the other side and not visible, I would be driving around with it smiley  Anyway, I am leaning towards just changing 1 tire

Shave the flap so centripetal force is not pulling on it and coat with rubber cement and a touch of black paint and put it on the rear for now and replace when you can.

Hell in my crazy mind I might try gluing the flap back with rubber cement using a piece of wood wedged against the ground or a hammer to promote bonding. Then monitor it and see if it starts coming apart. And again put it on the back till you can get a new tire. There will not be a lot of flex under normal driving on that part of the tire. That being said an autocross or the like will pull any attempt of bonding that apart.

I would never do all of the above it was my wife's or kids car.

If no cords are cut, that is 100% cosmetic/superficial.

Packing with rubber cement and gluing it down is a pretty good idea, will keep debris from getting in there.

The only concern I would have is if this is a cut or if it is impact damage.  If it is a cut, it is nothing.  If it is impact damage, the inner liner may also be compromised, and THAT is a no-go.
