In reply to MattW:

The 3.0 liters are known to pop HGs. It was covered by an extended warranty in some cases. My 99 has the 3.4 and has been as right as rain. Only changed plugs, an O2 sensor and a MAF sensor.

I don't think that anyone has figured out an effective way to do that, otherwise half of this forums members would have already done it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I had a hand in trying to kill a 3rd gen 4runner..... We didnt, it finally drove to the junk yard under its own power. FWIW a bone stock one on BFG AT's went everywhere my 86 on 36's locked went (with some tow strap help :D ) Rockers were beat back so doors could be opened, every panel was dented etc, but it still drove....

Uh, I gotta say. None of these. But if this is the army you have...Astro, I guess. Or try to get the 4Runner for less than that insane price. Or buy the disco and make sure you pray often enough.

I'd be looking for one of those Lexus Land Cruiser machines (LX430 or something) . They never see off-road use, so finding a nice one is easy. They also have all the off-road goodies that the LC have, so you actually can get serious in the mud. They also have all the luxury do-dads, so you can pamper yourself (and Mrs. Poop) while you are conquering the vast hillbilly wastelands!

Or an old Econoline 4x4 with the 460, and turn it into a Quigley on the cheap!

I wondered why you don't see much of my suggestion. If you can put a 6bt Cummings in a Cadillac, you should be able to put a V8 where a V8 lives.

None of the above. Clearly Vehicross is what you need.

Lifted 4x4 van is always the answer.

Buy the Disco. $500. What's there to lose?

A $500 rover could be worth it just for the "I got stranded..." story.

What's stopping an experienced guy from swapping a Wrangler powertrain into a Discovery?

Especially if it's built to wheel.

WMS could possibly be matched with wheel offset?
