I know this change is well documented in the Subaru world but does anyone know if it's been done with an Audi? I'm looking for a donor car and for every Passat or fwd Audi A4 I'm finding six awd A4s. I've tried to find an answer on the VAG dedicated forums but most of the responses just make me fear for our future.

I think the answer lies in how the AWD rear driveshaft is driven.  If the clutch that applies the power to the rear is in the diff, just plug the hole and go.  If the clutch is in the trans, it will be more involved.

I don't do German, but Volvo just drives the stuff off a spline on the outside of the ring gear carrier.  Lose the angle drive, you have a FWD.

Aren't there a couple of kit cars that spec the VAG transaxle?  Might be able to get a better answer through those venues.  I wouldn't expect anyone on a VAG forum to really know.  I did a bit of googling, but ran out of time before I could find any substantial information.  I'm sure it has to be possible, although you may have to make or buy some sort of blocking plate.

I have a 2wd Passat trans sitting in my garage right now.  Near as I can tell it literally just has a cap on the back of the tailpiece of the trans where the AWD driveshaft inserts.

You went to the VAGina forums. Those “people” (if you can call them that) are awful. Always come here first.

I believe the one you're looking for is the DVZ.

What exactly are you looking for in said donor car?  Before I tear into the Passat of leakage I'd be happy to sell it for cheap to a forum member.  2.8 v6, 5 speed FWD, and a whole car to keep it in.  I'll even throw in the spare transmission. laugh

I'm looking to repower my repowered Europa. I currently have a Toyota 4AGE in it but I'm on my second Renault transaxle. I'm looking at dropping an Audi 1.8t drivetrain into my car as a complete package replacement.

Then the DVZ might be a 2.8 V6 transmission only. I'm not sure what transmission the 1.8t came with in a longintudinal package...

There is an adapter that came in certain VAG cars that put the VR6 engine attached to the DVZ.

Pretty sure they are the same transmission actually.  My "spare" is from a 1.8 car and looks identical to the one in the car.

How would you shift such a setup?

In reply to KyAllroad :

I currently have a push/pull cable arrangement on the Renault tranny. I hope to be able to adapt that to work on the VW transaxle
