I really like the engine in my old benz because it makes more power than some of the smog restricted mercedes V8s and was wondering which other cool inline 6 motors there are. I know the datsun 240Z, some bmws, jags, supra, etc, but wanted the expert opinion on this forum to tell me which inline sixes are the coolest.
Thanks folks!
S50B32/S54B32 <- pretty close in specs, although we never got the S50B32 here.
I'm close to dropping an OBD-I S52B32 into my E30, so I'll vote for that one!
Chevy 230, but I'm biased. My best friend's dad in high school had a 65 Nova wagon with a built 230 with dual carbs. I've never seen anyone shift a 3 on the tree so fast before or since.

The Nissan RB-series engines are pretty cool. From RB20DE to RB26DETT, they all make decent power in their own right.
And they sound nice, too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SRBzefc3Rs
Ford 300...I want one with 3 turbo's...one for each two cylinders
The DOHC Chebby vortec 4200. Great engine with a lack of good platforms or support.
Volvo whiteblock I6s are neat.

+1
I bought two of them off ebay with busted liners and pistons. They were warranty engines. I wanted to put one in my 70 Chevelle with a turbo. That was before I found out what parts cost for them. At the time the only parts available were OEM. The pistons were almost 200 each.
I would still love to try it one day. Any engine that can supply 90% of it's torque from 1800-5000 rpms would rock.
Mopar Slant-6: The leaning tower of power.
They're actually pretty decent engines.
1 or 2JZ-GE, turbo optional.
I think a better question would be if there's an UNcool inline 6. Talking just about the engine here, not the chassis it may or may not be burdened by.
About the only one I can think of is the Ford 170/200 I6, but that's only because the intake manifold is integral to the head, and it's cast for a single-barrel carb. And really, it's still kinda cool. Besides, Ford Australia makes up for it with the turbo 4.0 Falcon inline 6er.

And bulletproof, too.
way back in the day a friend of mine bought and built a 225ci slant six mated to a 4 speed to replace the 170ci 3 on the tree setup in his 1965 barracuda. We went out a purposely tried to blow up the 170ci motor by running it WOT in first gear- it maxed out it's revs- fire against internal friction making a horrific screech, but it refused to blow up. I'll never forget.. He set it up with front disk brakes, Addco? sway bars, gabrial something or another shocks, and the best radials you could get back then (1980?). We lived up on the side of San Gorgonio mountain, and Highway 38 was our personal racetrack. Great Road.

1996 Nissan RB26DETT VSpec - this one makes 471 rear wheel hp and 448 ft/lbs of torque in a 2536lb car. Fully built, they can make well over 1000 whp.
I'd give a vote to the Toyota 2JZ as well. Both incredible motors with awesome potential.
Ford 300 = best kept secret in drag racing.
They look badass with headers and three DCOEs

Also Ozzies had a crossflow head for the 200 which is easily (and cheaply) imported, making it a cool and powerful engine.
My vote is for the venerable AMC/Jeep 232/238/4.0. Grab a 258 and a 4.0 and make yourself a 4.6L stroker I-6. AMC slapped a turbo and Bosch fuel injection on a 258 Spirit in 1980 to make the Spirit AMX PPG Pace Car (look it up, it's sweet). My grandfather bought it from designer Dick Teague and owned it for years. He took me around Daytona's banks in that thing at well over 100 during a Spring Spectacular one (we used to "pace" the field of show cars for their pictures on the banking and had to haul ass around turns 3/4 to pick up the next grouping). I will clone that car one day.
225 Slant six with HYPER-PAK = woody
Lycoming made a stright 6 that was great airplane motor for its time too.

I had a '61 Falcon 4 door with the 170. And the two-speed automatic. That car was fun as hell to cruise around in.
I always wanted to get a 300ci and a turbo the size of my head and see what could be done with it.

Mercedes C36 AMG twin cam inline six. 276hp, 3.6L, bolts to a W124 or R129 manual gearbox (manual gearbox compatability is not a given with Mercedes engines)
not sure if its a repost...4 ltr i6 from jeep wranglers are pretty damn tough
I've always wanted to take a Supra turbo drivetrain & stick it in something like an old Cuda.

I still love the look of a Nissan L28 with triple Webers. Sounded great, too. That was in a ratty looking 240Z, great sleeper.
the twin turbo 300hp 3.0 Liter in the new BMW 1, 3, 5, and 7 series has always struck me as an awesome piece of work. :)

+1 to the inline 6 from the jeep/amc stuff. I've always thought that it would be a good idea to slap a turbo on the engine since it has the intake and exhaust manifold on the same side. Makes for some short plumbing
I like this one and the car also
