2008 Honda CR-V EX-L. The sunroof won't retract, but it will tilt. I notice when I try the rear of the glass starts to dip and it starts to slide toward the rear then the left (driver's side) of the sunroof stops cause the unit to tweak in the tracks and stop moving. I push the button it returns to the fully closed position.

Tilt works as expected.

So before I tear into this thing this weekend to break/fix it, any ideas?

That's twice in a week. I guess my threads are getting harder...

Might be grit on the track. I don't know if you can get to the track without removing the headliner, though! If you get to the track, clean the tracks and gears and apply silicone lube (generously) or white lithium grease (sparingly).

I'm out of both, which would be the better solution?

This sounds like a job for my gun cleaning kit and a barrel cloth for my 22

White lithium is the right lube.

You might be able to get it open by "helping" it (gently pushing on the sunroof while pressing the open switch). Then you should be able to access the track a little better for cleaning and lubricating. But I'm not familiar with the CR-V sunroof specifically!

In reply to dculberson:

I tried to push back on the drivers side but it just stops. Like it hit a stick or something.

Might be worth it to remove the headliner just to make sure something isn't in the track.

Can you see into the track if you tilt it up?

Aftermarket or factory (not dealer) installed?

You should be able to remove the panel with it in the vent position. Once the panel is out you'll be able to access the tracks. Clean, lube, and inspect for broken linkages.

When you put the glass back in make sure the leading edge is 1-2 mm below the trim ring or roof skin and the rear is the same amount proud.

Second the idea that there's something on (or in) the track. My 2014 did a similar thing and the shop found a single maple twirler in the track. Pulled it out and voila, function restored to normal. They didn't even charge me.

Good luck - hope this helps...

just had time to do a quick inspection but nothing detailed. I did find a maple twirler in the sunshade track, but I didn't see one on the roof track, but I can look closer

It is definitely the rear mechanism.
