Nicest 1978 Dodge Aspen RT not worth $8K or am I missing this as a future classic?
It's a 360 car, which is good. It's not a t-top car, which is bad. It's technically a mopar and therefore eligible for mopar snobbery, which is good if that's your thing. It's also a volare, which is just about the worst mopar ever made, ever. That being said I'd pay him half of what he wants for this one. I already owned a t top rt once and the removable roof was the only redeeming quality of that car. I still however own a bird's egg blue 77 tbar volare that supposedly escaped the factory with a roadrunner package despite not being a roadrunner. Id trade it for a truck if it wasn't a family heirloom. My family is weird.
A volare is your family heirloom? Time for some new family. Atleast they could have given you a cordoba.
If the body was solid, it would be worth maybe four grand tops and that was before dum dum sprayed black all over it.
its seriojsly been through three generations. my uncle glenn bought it new in 77, sold it to my grandfather, who sold it to my uncle greg, who sold it to my dad, who died and left it to me. why it couldnt have been a trans am is beyonnd me.

The big saving grace is it has the roadrunner/ft Tupperware still present. That stuff rotted off most of the cars about an hour after purchase. My rt certainly didn't.have it.
That much, Really??? I saw one on locally on CL a month ago for $500. No rust. Engine (360) was seized though.
That looks like an Aspen Super Coupe, not the regular R/T. That's why it's one of 500 some. The flares and spoilers are hard to find. It used to have special paint and stripes.
Yea if it's solid it's worth more than a plane Jane one. Not sure if they are pulling $8K in that state though.

I thought the same thing- I didn't remember my RT having the flares and stuff- though my RT also had pop riveted panels and was purchased solely for the glass in the roof. It was... special.
Per Wiki: The Super Coupe came with GR60x15 Goodyear GT radial tires mounted on 15x8 wheels, a heavy-duty suspension with rear sway bar, a matte black finish on the hood and came only in one color - Sable Tan Sunfire Metallic. Special three color (orange, yellow and red) stripes separated the body color from the matte black colors. Only 531 were built.
Could the paint code help verify the SC?
I dunno, I'm not a Mopar guy.
I find it amazing that it hasn't rusted completely out. The steel they used in those days was already rusted on the roll before they formed it.

and that's why it piqued my interest. It looks like it runs on baby's tears.

It has the Super Coupe fender flares and wheels. All are parts that are hard to come by. The wheels are similar in appearance to the regular Mopar "cop" wheels, but not the same. The cop/HD fleet wheels are 15x7 and the hub has nubs to hold the dog dish hubcaps. The Super Coupe wheels do not have the nubs and were only available as 15x8. IIRC, the Magnum GT used the same centers as the Super Coupe wheels but on a 7" wide rim.
Edit: Yea a shot of the fender tag would help determine if it was born as a Super Coupe or not.
Just one more of the thousands of cases per year of "When selling a car of questionable value for inflated prices, make sure you rattle can it flat black"
This needs to stop. Last year at the Portland swap meet every third car received this treatment.
the engine bay pic reveals why it was painted flat black: the car was brown.. also, i'm digging the Fram air filter with the K&N lid, which i'm sure adds a ton of airflow when the hood liner is sagging on top of it..
A proper super coupe would have started life as a brown car. There is one local to me and the paint is glorious! The cool 70's stripes make it even cooler. The brown looks black most of the time, but a closer inspection reveals the fact that it is actually brown.

I suppose they were in fashion back then, but T-tops always seemed to only serve two purposes: 1) make the body even more flexy, and 2) provide a good way for water to leak in and rust the car even faster.
I agree with the posts about painting everything flat black. The factory brown wasn't all that bad.

Yeah, but the cars were already so terrible you might as well get a little wind in your hair while you look stupid. To be fair, I've always had a soft spot for t-bar cars of any fashion, so I may be biased. I know the slick-tops are stiffer, but E36 M3, it's a Volare. You aren't winning anything unless it's a rusting contest. And even then you may be beaten by a Lancia.
