I'm pretty sure there are only about three "normal" battery manufacturers in the US. Deka, Autozone, Interstate, NAPA, whatever - they're all coming from the same places.
Yup, just put a different sticker on it. There is a lot of automotive stuff like that.
Indeed. Top is the Walmart battery I was removing from the Taurus X a few years ago, bottom is the Motorcraft battery that replaced it:

The cost of batteries seems to be tied to the value of scrap metal to some extent. It would be interesting to weigh the different variants.
For conventional lead acid batteries you're spot on. The higher quality battery will have more lead. You want the heaviest one you can get for your dollar. I got that from a former boss who transferred over to the battery division of our company. The contract batteries are built to a price point knowing how much lead will be needed.
I bought the cheapest AutoZone that would work with my SE-R. Dies every day it's really cold as if there is a quick/slow drain and never dies/drains for days if it's warm and it is less than six months old.

Costco has Interstate batteries for pretty cheap. The battery with a 48 month warranty was around $90 for my 4runner. The price on Interstate's website was over twice that. Just got it so no idea if it's any good.
