+1 on Subi CVT. It feels weird at first, but it is better than any conventional auto I've driven. And it helps the Legacy get 35 mpg, my parents have nearly broken 40 on road trips.

Manual required? Go check out the Renegade. I'm a big fan, and they come with a turbo, stick, and real enough awd.
My wife has survived 13 winters driving a RWD Trailblazer - this year Chicago had a mild winter so I imagine if she did have 4WD she wouldn't have used it at all. She argues with me her next vehicle MUST have 4WD/AWD because of the rural roads where we live.
She survived 10 winters with a S10 4X4 with the old school floor 4WD shifter - she probably made the effort to go into 4WD 10x over 10 winters.
I had an '08 4WD Trailblazer for work and I admit I loved have 4WD for the bad weather........ Once I got tapped hard in a lake effect snow storm taking my son to Holland, Michigan one wintery day. I barely made it with what I had much less a 4X2.
