Trying to install this style on one of the CV boots on my DSM. I am about a mm shy of getting it to fit. Am I just too weak? Are the tricks to this? I got a 3-pack of different sizes, but the next size up is way too big, even after I crimp it, it'll be too big, and this one I can't get on prior to crimping.

What the hell? Any other styles you guys recommend?

I also tried one of these

But ended up breaking it as I failed to hold the band down while prying with a screw driver.

zip tie??? I hate those things and do have some held on with zip ties after giving up.

Do you have the special crimping tools, or are you using pliers? I'm guessing you just bought a multi-pack, as opposed to the correct clamp. Perhaps try to get one for that specific diameter from a different parts source? autozone will let you borrow a special crimping pliers, but they are cheap and don't work great.

I intended to use a pair of diagonal cutters to crimp the clamp, because that's what the instructions suggest, but last night my friend told me they make special pliers for just this purpose, which I saw as I was using google to locate images of the clamps.

However, I haven't even reached the stage where I'd be able to crimp it yet, so I need to solve that issue first.

A pain in the butt, those can be... I've had some success with channel-lock pliers... However, the easiest way is to use pliers designed for the job... such as these:

(I have this set). The 3rd one from the left makes those clamps easy. These types of clamps are all over a MINI...

Why not just replace them with worm-drive clamps? Because these clamps are designed to hold tight while still allowing the hose to expand and contract with temperatures w/o damage.

I was under the impression those are for hoses only, I need to clamp a CV boot.

just pull hard on the folded section to streach it some this will let you grow it to hook it then use the plyers to crimp it.

Hose clamps most of the time will hitt the spindel.

http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/KD-3955.htmlI've got a pair of these the squeeze the sides in and oush the top down to lock them in, if you build many cv's it's well worth having, heck just rebuilding one set is 8 clamps, they make the process quick and painless

I've used the pliers I mentioned to re-use the style of clamp shown in your first post... the ones they say to replace... Owning that tool, I find them much faster and easier than old-style hose clamps.

If installing a brand new clamp, then yes, you'll need the KD pliers described above. Fortunately, I haven't needed it yet...

Some cars actually come from the factory with zip ties instead of hose clamps. Zip ties are holding all of the drivetrain boots on my AE92, and the steering rack boots. If you get a screw-type hose clamp, you can open it up completely and then put it back together once it's on.

Ok, I considered a screw type hose clamp, but I assumed that there was a good reason why hose clamps were marketed for hoses, and cv boot clamps were marketed for cv boots. If I can interchange em, I'd much rather use a screw type hose clamp.

As was mentioned, the hose clamps won't usually work for the outboard joints due to interference with the spindle.

I'll admit that after much greasy bloodletting and cussing, I too resorted to zip ties in the past,.

On my Mini, the head of a zip tie is too large for the outer boot to clear the spindle, if you can believe it. I ended up using a stainless clamp called "Band-It", I think you can get them through NAPA. No special tools required, but they aren't cheap.

Ok, went to NAPA and they had some kickass adjustable clamps. Problem solved, axle is back in the car.
