Our latest dashcam crash thread has me thinking. I know it can be done, and easily, but I hope someone here has a better feel for the good/bad of the current crop of apps for an iphone to turn it into a dashcam.

Anyone have any reviews?

I don't know if the camera angle is going to be wide enough on the iPhone. The dashcam's are pretty wide angle to get a good view.

FWIW, I picked up a $60 one on amazon and am thoroughly impressed.

EDIT: Here is the one I got, Its $72 now and needs and SD card..... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UUQD9L6/ref=twister_B06ZYMBFLG?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

This is not quite on point but here it is.  I have been using Harry's Lap Timer as a budget track dashcam with data overlay, since 2013 I think.

java's right, the lens on a phone isn't exactly wide angle.  I get adequate field of view with a clip-on wide angle lens, though.

But each generation of iphone since the 5 has gotten worse and worse as a dash cam.  The 7 is unusable.  There is some kind of hardware-based image stabilization that goes haywire when a user tries to video out the windshield of a moving car.

So before you hunt for an app, try your phone in plain old video mode as a test first.
