David Freiburger has joined Youtube now, and has been posting stuff weekly. Pretty cool stuff, and I've always thought he was a terrific storyteller. A good breadth of content too. Road trips to check out cool junkyards or Americana, cool stories about speed shops and street-racing in LA, the wild tale of his Super Bee being in an afterschool special with Henry Winkler, Scott Baio and Danny Devito.

I met Freiburger and Finnegan at LSFest back in 2010 and they were pretty cool. I just remember Freiburger asking me if I knew of any cheap $500 cars in the area, and then Finnegan ran up and went "There's a dude with some Toyota that he's willing to sell us, but it doesn't have reverse." And Freiburger laughed and said "We'll just make sure only to park where we can pull through." That was when they were trying to buy something to drive from LSFest to the start of Drag Week, and they ended up buying the old Bowling Green dragstrip ambulance, which was completely green with mold, since it had been completely submerged that spring during the bad flood.
I like the guy, but cannot stand the flip-flops. Like, no matter the weather or conditions, he's in sandals. Trekking through mud? Hiking in snow? Driving a sketch build at high speeds? Flip Flops. I just can't take anyone seriously when they are wearing those silly things.

I worked with a guy who wore shorts - every single day. Rain, snow, or hail, always shorts.
His latest video is all about dry lakes racing, it's very interesting. I'm a fan of hot rod history, and while I already knew a lot of stuff he's talked about in previous videos I still learned a lot of things I didn't know.

The interesting thing with Freiburger is that he kind of bridges the gap between basically three major generations of Hot Rod Mag. He worked firsthand with all the old-school guys, like Gray Baskerville and Ro McGonegal, then just started when the '80s and '90s Pro Street movement and Fastest Street Car in America were full swing and Power Tour got it's start, and then led the charge into the Drag Week and Roadkill era.

It is but it's real. I do not like to see men's feet and will go way out of my way not to. Nor will I display my own feet. It's Crocs for me. For that reason

Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off-Road was an unexpectedly great publication there for awhile in the late '90s and early '00s. Like a lot of print, it never really was the same after the '09 bust.

I liked how "real" it was... like, "here's how we welded a spindle back together with three batteries, some jumper cables, and a bunch of nickels" kind of stuff. Or "what you have to do after you flood your truck" - all the fluids, fixing the radiator after the fan gets sucked forward and holes half the tubes, etc.

Friebuger's Junkyarcraft was a lot like that, with more of a smart ass attitude. It felt very real, and definitely a fun read.
Freiburger is a real car guy. I remember reading him when he was editor of Hot Rod. I wasn't into hot rods or American V8s back then, but I'd read Freiburger because he spoke to the guy who wasn't able to just write checks to have something built. He also likes dogs, which is the sign of a decent human I would hang out with.
Flip-flops: a California thing. I knew a guy who ran/runs a repair shop in Santa Cruz. He never wore anything else, either. Josh on the Sleeperdude channel is the same way, but will concede to actual boots when it gets cold enough (he's in TN). Crocs, though, are more off-putting to me. A man wearing crocs looks like a giant child with a mental deficiency. There, I said it. Crocs are sandals for people who know they should wear shoes but can't make a commitment. I don't wear crocs, sandals, flip flops or slides. I can't stand the feel of anything other than a proper shoe. Now, get off my lawn.
I think David's channel is probably a safety net for the inevitable failure of the Motor Trend media channel. MT is run by non-car people, and it shows. They can't keep talent like Tony Angelo or won't keep talent like Steve Magnante. The competition from independent YT channels, doing what MT should be doing but isn't, will be their downfall. I suspect Freiburger sees that, and is running out the clock while building his own channel.
He is like your cool uncle who you will hang around just to hear his stories.
I'm not as hard core as Freiburger, but these have 5-6 seasons of Lemons races on them. I have a nicer pair to wear out in public.
Crocs look like athletes foot. I can feel my toes start to rot off when I see them.
Watched two episodes last night. Loved them both.
I like the travel log feel to most of Dave's videos. The only wrenching he does is when he has to. He takes a different vehicle each time so the car visuals don't get stale. Overall, I like seeing Homeless Dave back on YouTubes.

Yeah, and I think that's part of his reason for getting on YouTube, some of this stuff doesn't exactly fit the Roadkill mold. Like, I think the video of showing LA street racing spots and old speed shops would be a hard sell to the network. Or the solo road trips, because MTOD always seemed to want two hosts minimum for an episode.
I wear Keen sandals when I'm wade fishing. They work well for that.
On topic, I've added this channel to my list of "interesting, non-stressful things to watch when I just want to chill out a bit because life is grinding me down" things. Thanks exposing it to me.
