I'm definitely not slighting the accomplishment at all - that's a damn fast car. I'm just thinking that if you want to go fast in the standing mile, wouldn't it make sense to start with a drag car that can already hit those speeds in 1/4th(or less) the distance & modify it from there to suit the added distance/run time?

For some, it's the challenge of doing it in a street car, or just a certain model.

It makes no sense, but I want the world's fastest Honda TwinStar. How fast can I go on 194cc's?

Funny you should mention small cc bike speed trials. A few years back a group of online friends and explored trying to attempt an assault on the Ohio mile that is sanctioned by ECTA....east coast timing assn. We never could get the effort organized although we had several folks with intesting donor bikes.....and we had a 18 year old rider that weighed about 100 lbs.

To give you an idea the 50cc record was 56 mph.....100 cc recoRd was 65 mph....175 cc record was something like 80 mph. 250 cc record was a tick over 100 mph.

Might be a fun GRM forum land speed team challenge adventure.

They claim it's All stock aero, at least when they ran 280mph

You are correct. I thought there was a front splitter. Rewatching it appears there is not.

GULF Livery is best livery.

I wonder what the stability of a drag car is like over 1 mile? They seem a bit like Wylie E Coyote lighting the Acme rocket then holding on for dear life until the parachute slows them in (hopefully) a straight line.

Anyway I'm sure it's possible to use a drag related chassis, but what's cooler? Saying you did 400 mph in a dragster or saying you did 300mph in an stock bodied street car?

I have often wondered about modifying a dragster for a mile run. I'm definitely thinking turbos in place of a supercharger.

There are so many things to get right to do that. Aero balance must be pretty good. It didn't fly away, it didn't run into an aero wall. Engine is sturdy enough to last 30 seconds. Gear ratios. Cooling, although meth would take care of a lot of that. Finding a guy brave and cautious enough to run it out the top end in style. Yeesh...

I'm not sure about the smaller displacements, but I'm pretty sure a Ninja 250 can get well past 100mph with the right gearing/aero.

Drag cars are geared to be all out at 1320/1000 ft.

Would need some work to do the mile .

Those are probably unstreamlined (naked) records. The Ninja would be considered semi-streamlined.

In reply to Appleseed:

Yes....those records were just for the Ohio mile event. Out of curiosity I Google Bonneville salt flats and a 50cc stream line did something like 125 mph on a two way average. Definitely different sandbox....or maybe I should say salt box.

I think the Ohio record may be a stock bike.

FWIW top speed on a Ninja 250 is listed at 105 mph.

I grew up around drag cars and I see several problems. Tires, cooling and fuel are biggies. I'd imagine you'd choose an alcohol car for the cooling issues- so perhaps that one works. I have no idea what you'd do for suspension and tires though. Tires would heat up and rips themselves to pieces I would think. Drag cars are setup softer than regular cars to allow them to get off the line, I don't see that working for long distances. Heck, I've been in a pro stock car at the end of several tracks that got more than a little squirrely- and that was on an 1/8th track.
