Little bit of a back story here: I am not allowed to do oil changes in my parking garage, and oil changes are cheap, so I take it in to be done. The last one was at a Mazda dealership. This one was at an oil change place. The guys tell me whoever changed the oil last screwed the filter in so tight that when they unscrewed it, it also unscrewed the bolt connecting it to the oil cooler. When putting it all back together, they found that either they stretched the O-ring, or it had become stretched at some point before. In any case, it now needs an O-ring in there.
He told me that he had never seen the oil cooler on a Miata before, and that the dealer told him it was a dealer or factory add-on, someone checked the box. I wasn't aware that this was an option, I just thought that all of them had it... Can anyone confirm this? It IS an OEM part.
Car is a 99 10AE, fyi, and at least 3 or 4 of the 4 or 5 owners have been SCCA members, so it would make sense that whoever bought it originally would have checked that box if it was a box to check.
Yup factory add-on. It was added to every Miata at the factory from 1994-05
It's a little less consistent on the NC cars.

Ok, so a stock unit to every car, that is what I thought. This guy apparently has only worked on 1.6 models, or else doesn't realize that there is no relation of NB's and NC's.
It's on many many Mazdas of that time period. MX6 has one, and i wouldn't be surprised if it's the same part numbers for that matter.

Probably is the same part, not a very unique engine. Too bad the local Mazda dealer didn't have any in stock. Annoying how an oil change can take 2.5 days, but thats what you get daily driving a 14 year old car. Good thing it should only be about $50 when all is said and done.
If i'm reading your post right, you only need an O-Ring, right? Get to the hardware store!

Yes, but it is in the hands of the oil change place, and I am at work all day. I'm letting them handle it as he told me it won't be more than $10 for the part, not worth my time to get it myself at this point. Especially as I'm relying on the bus and friends for rides everywhere.
And yes, I realize that $10 for an oil ring is a little bit outrageous, but I doubt it will be that much, and I'm just beyond the point of caring.
