I'm sure this has been discussed in teh past, but I'm still asking again...
After a ton of searching Craigslist for a Miata replacement, I've really seen some delusional prices out there. Like a seller asking $9k for a car that typically sells for $3-4k. Cars that are so hideously riced out and ruined are seen by the seller as a hot ticket item. Sometimes however the worst can be a seller with a clean unmodified car that is aware of the rarity and is asking for almost new pricing (on a 5-10 year old car). Case in point, a stock evo 8 with semi-low miles with an asking price of $25k.
Do these cars actually sell? Do most sellers take a far less offer? Do they give up and take the car off the market? I just don't see how some of these cars move, but with the ads deleted, something is decided upon.
YOU try and find a stock legal Evo 8. Everything I see is heavily modified.
I think the thinking goes, "hey my car is modified so it's WORTH MORE so I want $16k for my rusty fart-cannoned Evo" and then the thinking is "Hey a modified car is worth less and my car is clean and well maintained so $25k is about right"

yes this applies to any kewl brodude cars, EVO 8, 240SX, AE86..... anything that is pop culture popular like that. Jeremy Clarkson or an anime says a car is cool? Doubles in price almost instantly.
That's why I look at cars like AW11, W30, Z31, Starion, etc. At least as far as japanese stuff.
whenever I see a $8k to $15k S13 I do wonder if people actually pay that.
Wait like a couple years and start importing WRX, EVOs, GTRs, Familia GTR, Pulsar GTIR for fractions of these prices. All these brodude car prices are going to crash like they did in canada. I paid less than $9k for a Skyline GTS-T incl all fees when that is what people ask for a clean 240sx now almost. Insane.
the importers find you a clean car too.

When the STI first came out, I had an offer to trade a new, legal STI for a beat, riced out, JDM clone for even money. The buyer couldn't believe I wouldn't trade him even for his dubious abortion, never mind give him money in addition to the car. His logic was "I overpaid for all these parts and to have them installed, you should be as dumb as me". Thanks for the opportunity.
I too had a "I can't believe you won't trade me!!!!" experience when I sold the Miata, well actually two.

Me pay $1k on top of a trade for a 1991 Cadillac Alante.

A 1986 Dodge Convertible Automatic with red interior. - This guy was almost speechless when I said I wouldn't trade him.
I have not looked for Miata.. but I find that Utility trailers have crackpipe prices. The same trailer that any big box store sells for $600.. but is rusty, dented, and beaten up with an unknown number of years on it... $600 on CL.
I've seen this at a muscle car hot rod shop that did lots of consignments
Finally I asked why the guy with a not so great lemans gto clone was asking 45k.
He said his wife was pestering him to sell it so he brought it down, slapped a stupid price on it and would gladly pay out monthly consignment fee for a few months to get his wife off his back and keep his toy

And then if it does sell, he buys a real GTO after a few years. Nice.
Most insane price I saw recently: 2001 Nissan Xterra, KBB ~ $3000 for a noice one, wants $11,995. Or $255 a month.
whoa - is this always the answer? (with all those "working" gauges he still replaced the engine?)

On board battery charger. The wiring is so Berkleyed that the battery holds a charge for about 20 minutes...
