Dealing with Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace always makes me smile.  I listed some Jeep parts for sale that came with a Wrangler I just bought.  Seat covers, grab handles, lights, etc.  Some stuff most Jeep people want but I didn't.  While dealing with some "what's the lowest you'll take"  one guy offered a Dewalt XR 20V Impact with two batteries.  I don't have air tools jsut good ole hand tools, and honestly, I think I'd like to have an impact for general garage stuff.  I do a lot of brake work, not just my own, but helping no car buddy's do their brakes.  I bet I've done 5 sets of front and rear brakes, pads and rotors in the past year.  So I'm thinking log nut removal made easier if nothing else.  But really don't know much about this specific one.  Anyone have it?  Thoughts on it?  How useful are they to have around for other projects?

Cordless impacts in general are great to have. I use mine for lots of stuff, including things I probably shouldn't.

That said, I don't like or trust DeWalt cordless anything. Lots of people here seem to like them, but they've been nothing more than hammers for me.

Coming from faceplace or craigslist, my money would be on the batteries being shot or something wrong with the tool itself though, but that's just good old reinforced pessimism from so many shotty transactions in the past.

Is he talking about the 1/4" drive one or the 1/2"?

I have both. The 1/2" drive one is awesome. I don't use the 1/4" much.

20v DeWalt stuff is really good.

I had an 18v Dewalt cordless drill driver, bought at one of the home boxes, that didn’t last at all. It may have been lower grade than some of their other stuff, but I wouldn’t recommend the brand based on that.

I have 2 of them, the little one (impact driver), and the mid range one (330 ft lbs).  They have both been great although I got a bit ambitious with the 330 one and broke the bolt heads off of some caliper slide pins.  There is the big one that has like 700-1200 ft-lbs, which is a bit much for my needs.  I haven't had any problems and the batteries seem to last a long time between charges.

I use dewalt stuff, originally got it for the renovation of the casa. I always used pneumatic stuff for cars. Then I caught my self grabbing it for quick auto jobs, now Im pretty much exclusively electric. Even if my electric stuff wont break something free, i just break it loose with a ratchet or breaker bar, then zip it out with the impact.

Mine are an older set, 18V i think, they can take off most things Id expect them to. 100 ft lbs lugs is about their limit.

The Dewalt XR stuff has been really great for us at work and we use it all heavily Day in and day out. But make sure you know which impact it is. There’s a 1/4” impact driver intended for driving screws into wood and the like. It’s great and I use a similar tool for small bolts on the car but it’s not going to do lug nuts. The 1/2” cordless impacts are incredible but make sure that’s what he’s offering!

I use the 1/4” hex drive impact daily professionally.  I love it.  I got the big monster (1100ish lb ft) 1/2” drive 20v for track and out of compressor range work and i find myself using it in the garage now instead of getting out air tools.  It makes my $$$ IR air impact look like it should have cost me $15 at harbor freight.

It's the 1/2" impact.  And the 20v version, which is the same batteries as my weed eater.

I'm starting year 3 of my 20V Dewalt cordless and the original battery. I rely on it heavily to the point I don't even know if my Mac air impact even works.

Ridgid 18V full compliment of battery powered tools here. Great to have and worth the up front cost. They have a lifetime tool replacement warranty along with a very good battery warranty. Just have to register each tool on their website.

The new Gen V tools are brushless now too with a load more torque and run time.

In reply to kevinatfms :

There a catch to that one I've found out. You have to physically take the tools to an authorized service center for the warranty work to be done. No mail in, no returning to home depot.

For me, the local service centers are an hour past the far side of nowhere, so now the tools just gather dust.

The rigid stuff I had 6 years ago was worlds better than the stuff I bought 2 years ago that taught me about the service centers as well.

No opinion on Dewalt, but having a 1/2" cordless impact changed my life.  Its the best investment I made in the garage in years.

I do not have the impact guns, but I am looking to get them. We use DeWalt tools at work and I use them at home. I have never had a problem with any of them. Looking at some of my corded ones, I am not even sure why they are still working. Using them on boats is probably one of the hardest jobs a tool could have. Glassfibre, glassfibre dust, paint dust, epoxy, I even drilled into the lead keel of my boat to extract a bolt. It's a hard life and they keep right on trucking

DeWalt XR stuff is supposed to be good.  I wouldn't touch DeWalt that isn't.  They have cheapened DeWalt over the past several years.

a cordless impact will change your life!!!

if its a 1/2 drive then working on your cars will be much easier. if it is the hex drive then working on your house will be much easier. Both are very worthwhile tools. just pick the battery brand you want or already have.
