Just suck it up and get a real bike, CarKid. Find a Sporty or an early Evo. Don't settle for a "Honduh Harley." People will just snicker when you're not looking.
Insurance on my 2 Harleys is now $120/year total with the lizard. Went up from about $105 last year (inflation that we don't have.) Just don't opt for all the BS and just get liability.
OK going out to look at a 02 tomorrow, was laid down so should be cheap.
Wife is going to kill me, I don't really have the space until I get the SSR out to storage.

I've ridden for 25 years or so, and sold Harleys (and BWMs, Ducatis, Buells, Triumphs, Bimotas and Yamahas) for a living for a spell. Prior to that I ran the parts/accessories/motorclothes department of said HD dealer. I was even "P.A.C.E." certified - ask anyone who's worked for The Motor Company about that painful process...
Anyway. I've sold Sportsters. I've ridden a bunch of them - and compared with all the other motorcycles one can buy for the same kind of money will offer that they're prehistoric in their architecture, crudely designed, and manufactured in a manner more consistent w/ 70's American cars than proper motorcycles. Big zinc plated hex head bolts all over - DOT 5 brake fluid - 1" diameter handle bars - really dodgy "styling".
There's so many perfectly good motorcycles in the world one can buy for next-to-nothing.
I never sold a single sportster to someone who'd considered any other brand of motorcycle - it wasn't like a small Ducati Monster was an option at about the same price, or a BMW F650, or Yamaha FZ6 - they wanted A Harley - and if they couldn't afford a Big Twin a Sportster would do.
The XL1200R is nearly a real motorcycle - but they're still real money.
What I ride mostly - cost Sportster money when I got it:
OK so rode the 02, I need to go older though, I like the rougher ride and the 4 speed has a kick start kit available if I want to go that route. The new ones are nice but I am looking for a toy not a daily tool. Will keep you guys updated.
So I thought I REALLY did not like Harleys. Now I'm seeing the bobber kits on them and suddenly they're not looking too bad. Its like when the nerdy girl takes off her glasses in a movie and gets Hot with a capital "H."
